Removal and Installation

Removal

All vehicles

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Use an Allen key to prevent the piston rod turning.
    Loosen the right-hand strut and spring assembly upper retaining nut five turns (right-hand side shown).

  1. Loosen the right-hand wheel nuts and wheel hub retaining nut.
    • Remove the front drive halfshaft stub nut. Loosen using a 32 mm socket.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.
  1. Remove the left-hand side front wheel.

  1. Detach the right-hand and the left-hand lower arms (left hand side shown).
  1. Remove the right-hand wheel hub retaining nut and washer.

  1. Using a two-legged puller press the left-hand halfshaft out of the wheel hub and tie it up.
Vehicles with diesel engine

  1. Remove the heat shield.
Vehicles with 1.6L engine

  1. Remove the heat shield.
All Vehicles

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Pull out the right-hand halfshaft straight otherwise the oil seal will be damaged.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner constant velocity joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees, the outer constant velocity joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Watch out for escaping oil. Close off the transaxle with plugs.
    Using the special tool, remove the right-hand halfshaft.

Installation

All Vehicles
NOTE:
NOTE:Use new snap rings and self-locking nuts.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:When inserting the front drive halfshaft, using the oil seal fitting sleeve (supplied with every new oil seal) to protect the oil seal.
    Halfshaft installation position.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner constant velocity joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees, the outer constant velocity joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.
    Install the right-hand halfshaft into the transaxle.
Vehicles with diesel engine

  1. Install the heat shield.
Vehicles with 1.6L engine

  1. Install the heat shield.
All Vehicles

  1. Using the special tool, draw the right-hand halfshaft into the wheel hub.
  1. Install the washer and wheel hub retining nut finger tight.

  1. Attach the lower right-hand lower to the wheel knuckle arm.
  1. Install the left-hand front wheel.
    • Tighten the wheel nuts finger tight.
  1. Check the transmission fluid level and top up as necessary. For additional information, refer to Section  308-00 Manual Transmission/Transaxle and Clutch - General Information.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Tighten the right-hand wheel hub retaining nut and wheel nuts.
    1. Tighten the wheel hub retaining nuts.
    1. Tighten the wheel nuts.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Use an Allen key to prevent the piston rod turning.
    Tighten the left-hand side and the right-hand strut and spring assembly upper retining nut.
