Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

  1. Remove the air intake hose.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Turn the spark plug connectors slightly before disconnecting them. Pull on the connector and not the wire.
    Disconnect the spark plug wires and connectors.
    1. Disconnect the spark plug connectors.
    1. Detach the spark plug wires and position to one side.

  1. Remove the oil filler cap.
    1. Lift the oil filler cap upwards.
    1. Detach the crankcase breather hose from the T-piece.

  1. Detach the accelerator cable.
    1. Detach the accelerator cable.
    1. Remove the clip.
    1. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle plate quadrant.

  1. Remove the idle air control (IAC) valve.
    1. Disconnect the IAC valve electrical connector.
    1. Remove the IAC valve and the resonsator.
    1. Remove the accelerator cable abutment bracket.

  1. Remove the throttle housing.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    1. Remove the bolts.

  1. Remove the valve cover and discard the gasket.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not turn the bolts on the rocker arms.
    Remove the rocker shaft.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not mix up the push rods.
    Remove the push rods.

  1. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.
  1. Remove the spark plugs.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Apply compressed air (7-10 bar) to the cylinder being worked on.
    Using the special tool connect the compressed air supply to the cylinder being worked on (cylinder No 1 shown).

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Lightly tap the valve spring retainer with a suitable drift.
    Using the special tools compress the valve spring and remove the valve collets.

  1. Using the special tool remove the valve stem seal.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Cover the valve collet grooves on the valve stem with adhesive tape to prevent damage to the valve stem seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Lubricate the valve stem and the valve stem seal with engine oil.
    Using the special tools install a new valve stem seal.

  1. Using the special tools compress the valve spring and install the valve collets.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Coat the spark plug threads with never seez.
    Install the spark plugs.

  1. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not mix up the push rods.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Coat the push rods with engine oil.
    Install the push rods.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not turn the bolts on the rocker arms.
    Install the rocker shaft.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Use a new gasket.
    Install the valve cover.

  1. Install the throttle housing.
    1. Install the bolts.
    1. Connect the electrical connector.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Clean and check the gasket. Install a new gasket if necessary.
    Install the IAC valve.
    1. Install the accelerator cable abutment bracket.
    1. Install the IAC valve and the resonator.
    1. Connect the IAC valve electrical connector.

  1. Attach the accelerator cable.
    1. Connect the accelerator cable to the throttle plate quadrant.
    1. Install the clip.
    1. Attach the accelerator cable.
  1. Adjust the accelerator cable. For additional information, refer to Section  310-02 Acceleration Control.

  1. Install the oil filler cap.
    1. Connect the crankcase breather hose to the T-piece.
    1. Push the oil filler cap downwards.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Thinly coat the spark plug connector seals with silicone grease.
    Connect the spark plug wires.
    1. Connect the spark plug connectors.
    1. Attach the spark plug wires to the clips.

  1. Install the air intake hose.
  1. Connect the battery ground cable.
