Description and Operation

Vehicle Identification Number

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a seventeen-digit alphanumeric code. The VIN tag is affixed in the engine compartment on the driver side of the front cowl panel. The VIN number is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.

World Manufacturer Identifier

The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier (WMI) code.

  • WF0 — Ford Motor Company, multi-purpose vehicle, European markets, left-hand drive vehicles
  • WF0 — Ford Motor Company (manufactured by Mazda Motors), multi-purpose vehicle, European markets, right-hand drive vehicles

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Restraint Type Code

The fourth VIN position identifies the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and/or the restraint type code (all vehicles use driver and front passenger air bags).

  • Y — 4,001 to 5,000 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags (left-hand drive vehicles)
  • C — 4,001 to 5,000 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags and driver and front passenger side impact air bags (left-hand drive vehicles)
  • Z — 2,268 to 2,721 kilograms GVWR without driver and front passenger side impact air bags (right-hand drive vehicles)
  • Y — 1,814 to 2,268 kilograms GVWR without driver and front passenger side impact air bags (right-hand drive vehicles)

Vehicle Line and Series Code

VIN positions five through seven indicate the vehicle line and series code.

  • U01 — Two-wheel drive, XLS
  • U02 — Four-wheel drive, XLS
  • U03 — Two-wheel drive, XLT
  • U04 — Four-wheel drive, XLT

Engine Code

The eighth VIN position identifies the engine displacement and number of cylinders code.

  • B — 2.0L Zetec, in-line four cylinder (left-hand drive vehicles)
  • 1 — 3.0L Duratec, six-cylinder (V6) (left-hand drive vehicles)
  • B — 2.0L YFD, in-line four cylinder (right-hand drive vehicles)
  • 1 — 3.0L AJD, six-cylinder (V6) (right-hand drive vehicles)

Check Digit

The ninth VIN position identifies a government-assigned, computer-generated check digit code.

Model Year Code

The tenth VIN position identifies the vehicle model year code.

  • 2 — 2002

Assembly Plant Code

VIN position eleven identifies the vehicle assembly plant code.

  • K — Kansas City (Claycomo, Missouri, USA), left-hand drive vehicles
  • 1 — Hofu (Hofu, Japan), right-hand drive vehicles

Production Build Sequence

The last six VIN positions are the production sequence number. This number may be either an alphanumeric (right-hand drive/left-hand drive vehicles) or a numeric (right-hand drive vehicles). This code is also used as the vehicle serial and warranty number.

Color Code

Paint codes may be listed as a two-part code. The first set of characters listed indicate the vehicle primary body color code. The second set of characters listed (if applicable) indicate a two-tone or accent body color code. All colors are base coat/clear coat.

  • BZ - Chrome Yellow
  • E4 - Red Vermilion
  • LD - Medium Wedgewood Blue
  • UA - Ebony
  • PX - Dark Highland Green
  • YZ - Oxford White
  • CX - Dark Shadow Gray
  • TL - Satin Silver
  • L2 - True Blue

Trim Code

The trim codes are listed as a two-part code. The first digit listed identifies the trim type. The second digit listed identifies the trim color.

Trim type codes are:

  • 2 - Low back Zing cloth seats
  • W - Low back Windows cloth seats
  • N - Low back Leather seats
  • 5 - Low back Nudo Leather seats

Trim color codes are:

  • H - Medium Dark Parchment
  • 2 - Medium Dark Graphite
  • B - Ebony

Axle Codes

  • 96 - Two-wheel drive axle
  • 69 - Four-wheel drive axle

Transmission Code

  • 3 - 5-speed manual transmission
  • 4 - 4-speed automatic transmission

Engine Code

  • B - 2.0L Zetec, in-line four cylinder (left-hand drive vehicles)
