Description and Operation

During service the selector cable assembly must be renewed as a complete unit.

The selector cable setting is part of this Section.

Selector lever

Position Meaning Note
P PARK For securing the vehicle. The engine can be started. Warning: Only engage when the vehicle is stationary (the automatic transmission is blocked; should be engaged during repairs on a running engine). If ""P" is not engaged then an acoustic signal sounds when the driver's door is opened. The transmission selector lever can only be moved out of the ""P" position if the ignition key is in position II and the footbrake is depressed. In an emergency (discharged battery) it can also be released manually - see selector lever immobiliser.
R REVERSE Only engage when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is idling.
N NEUTRAL The engine can be started - no power transfer to the drive wheels.
D Gears 1 to 4 (with overdrive) Normal driving position. All four gears are shifted electronically. After the engine is switched off the gears are shifted automatically. Driving with and without overdrive - see overdrive inhibitor button.
D Gears 1 to 3 (without overdrive) Normal driving position, but no 4th gear. Driving with and without overdrive - see overdrive inhibitor button.
2 Gear2 The transmission stays in 2nd gear.
1 Gear1 The transmission stays in 1st gear.

Selector lever immobiliser

NOTE:
NOTE:Returning the selector lever to ""P" immobilizes the selector lever again.

It is possible to release the selector lever immobiliser mechanically from position ""P" if for example the battery is drained or disconnected.

  1. Use a ballpoint pen or similar to press the release lever forwards and hold it there.
  1. Pull the selector lever out of position ""P".

Overdrive inhibitor button

The overdrive function (suppression of gearshifts into 4th) can be switched off at the inhibitor button on the selector lever handle). A corresponding telltale on the instrument panel lights up to inform the driver that the overdrive function has been switched off.

Press the switch again to switch the overdrive function back on again - the telltale goes out.

Selector lever immobiliser button

To move the selector lever out of the PARK position, the ignition needs to be set to position II, the foot brake needs to be depressed and the immobiliser button on the side needs to be pressed in. The immobiliser button needs to be pressed in when shifting from ""R" to ""P", ""N" to ""R" and ""D" to ""2"

E/S program switch

E = economy mode

For normal driving in low engine speed ranges, achieved with early upshifts and late downshifts

S = sports mode with improved acceleration

For driving in higher engine speed ranges, achieved with late upshifts and early downshifts In this setting the E/S control light displays ""SPORT".

The setting can be switched over with the vehicle stationary or whilst driving.
