The instrument cluster provides the driver with information and warning indicators on vehicle systems

There are two basic levels of instrument cluster, with Tachometer and without Tachometer, vehicle option's dictate the operational warning indicators, although the legends may be fitted not all will be illuminated.

As with many electronic systems the gauges and warning indicators may use the outputs from common sensors to carry out their respective functions.

This should always be considered when looking at any system which may not be functioning correctly, for example:

The electronic speedometer receives its signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the transmission. Other systems which require the same input include, Engine Management, Anti-lock Braking, Traction Control, Speed Control, Trip Computer, Audio Unit and Satellite Navigation.

Always consider and check associated systems for operation as this may save time when looking for a fault.
