Diagnosis and Testing

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Chart

Mechanical Electrical
  • Parking brake control.
  • Parking brake cable(s).
  • Parking brake warning circuit.
    REFER to: Instrument Cluster (413-01 Instrument Cluster, Diagnosis and Testing).
  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the concern is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart.

Pinpoint Tests

PINPOINT TEST A : THE PARKING BRAKE WILL NOT APPLY

TEST CONDITIONS DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS
A1: CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE ADJUSTMENT

Carry out the parking brake cable adjustment procedure.
REFER to: Parking Brake Cable Adjustment (206-05 Parking Brake and Actuation, General Procedures).

Does the parking brake now engage correctly?
Yes
Parking brake is OK.
No
A2: CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE(S)

Inspect the parking brake cable(s) for damage, rust or fraying.

Are the parking brake cable(s) OK?
Yes
No
REPAIR or INSTALL new cables as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
A3: CHECK THE BRAKE PADS
1
Check the brake pads for excessive wear.

Are the brake pads OK?
Yes
INSPECT for other causes such as loose parking brake control or other brake system components. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL new brake pads. TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST B : THE PARKING BRAKE WILL NOT RELEASE

B1: CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE CONTROL

Release the parking brake control by pulling upwards on the control lever and pushing the release button.

Did the parking brake release?
Yes
No
INSTALL a new parking brake control. TEST the system for normal operation.
B2: CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE(S)

Raise and Support the vehicle on a free-wheel lift.
REFER to: Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation) /
Lifting - 3.0L Duratec-ST (VE6) (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).

Loosen the parking brake cable tension at the parking brake equalizer.

Rotate the rear wheels by hand.

Did the rear wheels turn freely?
Yes
INSPECT other brake system components, REPAIR or INSTALL new components as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL new parking brake cables. TEST the system for normal operation.
