Removal

All vehicles

  1. Detach the suspension strut cover.

  1. Undo each suspension strut top nut by four turns.

  1. Detach the stabiliser connecting link from the suspension strut.
  1. Detach the wheel. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.
Vehicles with diesel engine

  1. Detach the engine undershield.
Vehicles with xenon headlamps:
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The lower left suspension arm is equipped with a headlamp levelling sensor.
    Remove the headlamp levelling sensor. For additional information, refer to Section  417-01 Exterior Lighting.
All vehicles

  1. Detach the radiator splash shield from the subframe.

  1. Support the left-hand subframe with a suitable transmission jack .

  1. Remove the bolts from the rear of the subframe and the bolts from the subframe bracket.

  1. Undo the bolts by five turns on the rear of the subframe and on the subframe bracket (on the other side).

  1. Remove the bolts on the front of the subframe.

  1. Undo by five turns the bolts on the front of the subframe (on the other side).

  1. Lower the subframe by about 30 mm.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make certain that the subframe is lowered before the lower suspension arm ball joint is separated from the spindle carrier, so that the hydraulic mounting of the lower suspension arm is not damaged.
    Remove the lower suspension arm ball joint clamp bolt and nut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the rubber seal on the ball joint from damage using a soft cloth.
    Detach the lower arm ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
    • Remove the heat shield.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    Detach the halfshaft from the transmission using the special tools and secure it to one side.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
    • Discard the snap ring.

  1. Using the special tool, remove the halfshaft oil seal.

Installation

All vehicles

  1. Using the special tool, install the halfshaft oil seal.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the snap ring is correctly seated.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new snap ring.
    Attach the halfshaft to the transaxle.

  1. Attach the stabiliser connecting link to the suspension strut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that the heat shield is installed on the ball joint, to avoid heat damage.
    Install the heat shield and install the lower suspension arm ball joint on the spindle carrier.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install the lower suspension arm ball joint clamp bolt from behind.
    Install the lower suspension arm ball joint clamp bolt and nut.

  1. Align the subframe using the special tool and a suitable shim.
    1. Insert a shim with inner diameter 22 mm, outer diameter 44 mm and thickness 5 mm into the subframe, above the lower alignment hole.
    1. Slide a guide pin through the alignment holes of the subframe and the shim.
    1. Slide the retaining plates over the shim and into the groove of the special tool and tighten the sleeve of the guide pin.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The subframe must not move while the subframe bolts are being tightened.
    Tighten the bolts at the rear of the subframe and the bolts of the right-hand and left-hand subframe brackets.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The subframe must not move while the subframe bolts are being tightened.
    Tighten the bolts on the front of the subframe.
    • Remove the transmission jack.

  1. Detach the special tools.

  1. Install the radiator splash shield on the subframe.
Diesel-engined vehicles

  1. Install the engine undershield.
Vehicles with xenon headlamps:
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The lower left suspension arm is equipped with a headlamp levelling sensor.
    Install the headlamp levelling sensor. For additional information, refer to Section  417-01 Exterior Lighting.
All vehicles
  1. Install the wheel. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.
Vehicles with xenon headlamps:
  1. Initialise the headlamp levelling system using WDS.
All vehicles

  1. Tighten the suspension strut top nuts.

  1. Install the suspension strut cover.
  1. Check the level of the transmission fluid.
