Inspection and Checking

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually check the following electrical causes for the concern:

Disconnect fuse F80 (7.5 A) (CJB).

CHECK fuse F80 (7.5 A).

Is the fuse OK.?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F80 (7.5 A). CHECK the operation of the system. If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to ground using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A2: CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT FUSE F80 (CJB)

Connect fuse F80 (7.5 A) (CJB).

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between fuse F80 (7.5 A) (CJB) and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
RENEW the CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.
A3: DETERMINE MODEL VERSION

Determine the model version.

Is the vehicle equipped with automatic transmission?
Yes
- With 4-speed automatic (CD4E): GO to A6.
- With 5-speed automatic (5F31J): GO to A8.
No
A4: CHECK CIRCUIT 15-LG28 (GN/WH)

Disconnect reversing lamp switch from connector C181.

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between the reversing lamp switch, connector C181, pin 1, circuit 15-LG28 (GN/WH), wiring harness side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between fuse F80 (CJB) and the reversing lamp switch using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A5: CHECK REVERSE GEAR SWITCH

Ignition switch in position 0.

Use a fused test cable (7.5 A) to bridge the reversing lamp switch, connector C181, pin 1, circuit 15-LG28 (GN/WH) and pin 2, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK), wiring harness side.

CHECK the operation of the reversing lamps.

Do the reversing lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
RENEW the reversing lamp switch. CHECK the operation of the system.

LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between fuse F80 (CJB) and the transmission range sensor using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

Use a fused test cable (7.5 A) to bridge the transmission range sensor, connector C187, pin 1, circuit 15-LG28 (GN/WH) and pin 3, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK), wiring harness side.

CHECK the operation of the reversing lamps.

Do the reversing lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
RENEW the transmission range sensor. CHECK the operation of the system.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between fuse F80 (CJB) and the reversing lamp relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A9: CHECK REVERSING LAMP RELAY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Using a fused test cable (7.5 A) at the reversing lamp relay:
  • 5-speed automatic (5F31J): bridge between connector C909, pin 5, circuit 15-LG28 (GN/WH) and pin 3, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK), wiring harness side.
  • 5-speed automatic (5F31J) 2.5 l Duratec-VE: bridge between connector C908, pin 5, circuit 15-LG28 (GN/WH) and pin 3, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK), wiring harness side.

  • 4/5-door without trailer socket and without parking aid: connector C540, pin 5, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK)/15S-LG16 (GN/OG), wiring harness side and ground.
  • 4/5-door without trailer socket and with parking aid: connector C1038, pin 5, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK), wiring harness side and ground.
  • 4/5-door with trailer socket: connector C2005, pin 5, circuit (BK), wiring harness side and ground.
  • Estate: connector C1542, pin 2, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
- 4/5-door: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between soldered connection S211 and ground connection G300 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
-4/5-door without trailer socket and without parking aid: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit(s) between reversing lamp switch (manual transmission), transmission range sensor (4-speed automatic (CD4E)) or reversing lamp relay (5-speed automatic (5F31J)) and the left-hand rear lamp assembly, using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
-4/5-door without trailer socket and with parking aid: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit(s) between reversing lamp switch (manual transmission), transmission range sensor (4-speed automatic (CD4E)) or reversing lamp relay (5-speed automatic (5F31J)) and intermediate connector C540, pin 5, using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
-4/5-door with trailer socket: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between reversing lamp switch (manual transmission), transmission range sensor (4-speed automatic (CD4E)) or reversing lamp relay (5-speed automatic (5F31J)) and intermediate connector C540, pin 5, using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Estate: RECTIFY the break in the circuit between reversing lamp switch (manual transmission), transmission range sensor (4-speed automatic (CD4E)) or reversing lamp relay (5-speed automatic (5F31J)) and soldered connection S232, using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A11: CHECK CONTROL WIRE 15S-TA9 (GN/BK) OF REVERSING LAMP RELAY

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
A12: CHECK GROUND LEAD 31-LG28 (BK) AND 31-DA15 (BK) OF REVERSING LAMP RELAY

Measure the resistance between the reversing lamp relay:
  • 5-speed automatic (5F31J): socket C909, pin 1, circuit 31-LG28 (BK), wiring harness side and ground.
  • 5-speed automatic (5F31J) 2.5 l Duratec-VE: socket C908, pin 1, circuit 31-LG28 (BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Is the resistance less than 2 Ohm?
Yes
RENEW the reversing lamp relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the reversing lamp relay and soldered connection S411 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A13: CHECK CONTROL WIRES 15S-TA9 (GN/BK) AND 8-TA38A (WH/RD) OF REVERSING LAMP RELAY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect transmission range sensor from connector C225.

Measure the resistance between the transmission range sensor, connector C225, pin 7, circuit 8-TA38A (WH/RD), wiring harness side and the reversing lamp relay.
  • 5-speed automatic (5F31J): socket C909, pin 2, circuit 15S-TA9 (GN/BK), wiring harness side.
  • 5-speed automatic (5F31J) 2.5 l Duratec-VE: socket C908, pin 2, circuit 15S-TA9 (GN/BK), wiring harness side.

Is the resistance less than 2 Ohm?
Yes
CHECK the transmission range sensor using WDS, RENEW the transmission range sensor if necessary. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the reversing lamp relay and soldered connection S390 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

- Left-hand reversing lamp on the vehicle and reversing lamp on the trailer inoperative, 4/5-door with parking aid: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK), between intermediate connector C540, pin 5 and intermediate connector C2004, pin 5 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Left-hand reversing lamp on the vehicle and reversing lamp on the trailer inoperative, estate: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK) between soldered connection S232 and intermediate connector C2005, pin 5 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

- Right-hand reversing lamp on the vehicle inoperative: GO to B4.
- Reversing lamp on the trailer inoperative: GO to B6.

Is less than 2 Ohm measured?
Yes
CHECK and if necessary RENEW the left-hand rear lamp assembly. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
- 4/5-door: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit(s) between the left-hand rear lamp assembly and soldered connection S211 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Estate: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the rear lamp assembly and soldered connection S712 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
B4: CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-LG16 (GN/OG), 15S-LG9 (GN/BK) AND (GN)

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
-4/5-door without trailer socket and without parking aid: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit 15S-LG16 (GN/OG) between the left-hand rear lamp assembly and the right-hand rear lamp assembly using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
-4/5-door without trailer socket and with parking aid: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit 15S-LG16 (GN/OG) between the right-hand rear lamp assembly and intermediate connector C540, pin 5 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
-4/5-door with trailer socket: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit 15S-LG16 (GN/OG) or (GN) between the right-hand rear lamp assembly and intermediate connector C540, pin 5 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Estate: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit 15S-LG16 (GN/OG) or 15S-LG9 (GN/BK) between soldered connection S232 and the right-hand rear lamp assembly using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
B5: CHECK THE GROUND CONNECTION OF THE RIGHT-HAND REAR LAMP ASSEMBLY

Measure the resistance between the right-hand rear lamp assembly:
  • 4/5-door without trailer socket: connector C541, pin 6, circuit 31-LF20 (BK), wiring harness side and ground.
  • 4/5-door with trailer socket: connector C2007, pin 6, circuit (GN), wiring harness side and ground.
  • Estate: connector C1552, pin 1, circuit 31-LG9 (BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Is less than 2 Ohm measured?
Yes
CHECK and if necessary RENEW the right-hand rear lamp assembly. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
- 4/5-door: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit(s) between the right-hand rear lamp assembly and soldered connection S211 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Estate: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the right-hand rear lamp assembly and soldered connection S713 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
B6: CHECK THE TRAILER INTERFACE (TI) MODULE

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect trailer interface (TI) module from connector C2000.
3
Ignition switch in position II.

Engage reverse gear.

Measure the voltage between the trailer interface (TI) module, connector C2000, pin 9, circuit (BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
- 4/5-door: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit (BK) between the trailer interface (TI) module and intermediate connector C2004, pin 5 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Estate: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit (BK) between the trailer interface (TI) module and intermediate connector C2005, pin 5 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
B7: CHECK CIRCUIT (VT/OG)

Ignition switch in position 0.

Measure the resistance between the trailer interface (TI) module, connector C2000, pin 10, circuit (VT/OG), wiring harness side and the trailer socket:
  • 7-pin auxiliary trailer socket: connector C2013, pin 1, circuit (VT/OG), wiring harness side.
  • 13-pin trailer socket: connector C2012, pin 8, circuit (VT/OG), wiring harness side.

Is the resistance less than 2 Ohm?
Yes
CHECK and if necessary RENEW the trailer interface (TI) module. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit between the trailer interface (TI) module and the trailer socket using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

- Vehicles with manual transmission: RENEW the reversing lamp switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Vehicles with 4-speed automatic transmission (CD4E): RENEW the transmission range sensor. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Vehicles with 5-speed automatic transmission (5F31J): GO to C7.
C2: RULE OUT INTERIOR MIRROR WITH AUTOMATIC GLARE ADJUSTMENT AS POSSIBLE CAUSE FOR A SHORT TO BATTERY VOLTAGE

Disconnect fuse F91 (7.5 A) (CJB).

Do the reversing lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
- Vehicles with 2.0 l Duratorq-TDCi (Puma) diesel: GO to C6.
- All others: LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to voltage supply in the circuits connected to soldered connection S232 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system. If the concern persists, CHECK and if necessary RENEW the parking aid module.
No
CHECK and if necessary RENEW the trailer interface (TI). CHECK the operation of the system.
C6: RULE OUT PCM AS POSSIBLE CAUSE FOR A SHORT TO BATTERY VOLTAGE

Ignition switch in position 0.

Connect fuse F74 (20 A) (CJB).
3
Disconnect fuse F42 (15 A) (BJB).
4
Disconnect fuse F67 (7.5 A) (CJB).

Ignition switch in position II.

CHECK the reversing lamps.

Do the reversing lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to soldered connection S232 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system. If the concern persists, CHECK and if necessary RENEW the parking aid module.
No
CHECK the GEM module using WDS, RENEW if necessary. CHECK the operation of the system.
C7: CHECK REVERSING LAMP RELAY
NOTE:
NOTE:Ignition key is still in ON position.

Measure the voltage between the reversing lamp relay:

RENEW the reversing lamp relay. CHECK the operation of the system.

CHECK the reversing lamps.

Do the reversing lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
No
CHECK and if necessary RENEW the transmission range sensor. CHECK the operation of the system.

Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to soldered connection S390 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
CHECK the transmission control module using WDS, RENEW the transmission control module if necessary. CHECK the operation of the system.
