Fuel Tank and Lines - Fuel Tank Puma 1998 (06/1997-12/2001)
Removal and Installation

Removal

WARNING:
WARNING:Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near fuel related components. Highly flammable vapors are always present and may ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  1. Drain the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Detach the exhaust system from the front hanger insulator.

  1. Detach the exhaust system from the center hanger insulator.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:When detaching the exhaust system allow the system to be supported by the rear suspension assembly.
    Detach the exhaust system from the three rear hanger insulators.

  1. Remove the center and rear exhaust heat shields.

  1. Remove the fuel tank heat shield.

  1. Disconnect the fuel tank ventilation hose from the evaporative emission canister.

  1. Detach the fuel tank vent valve from the canister bracket.

  1. Disconnect the fuel tank filler hose from the fuel tank.

  1. Disconnect the vent hose from the fuel tank.

  1. Disconnect the fuel filter supply line to the fuel rail. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:When supporting the fuel tank, use a suitable packing material to prevent damage to the underside of the fuel tank.
    Support the fuel tank with a suitable jack.

  1. Remove the fuel tank retaining bolts (jack removed for clarity).

  1. Partially lower the fuel tank.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Fuel return line connectors are red or identified by a red band.
    Disconnect the fuel return line from the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.

  1. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.

  1. Remove the fuel tank.

Installation

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and can ignite. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
    To install, reverse the removal procedure.
