Multifunction Electronic Modules - Anti-Theft Alarm and Double Locking Module Puma 1998 (06/1997-12/2001)
Diagnosis and Testing

Principles of Operations

The generic electronic module (GEM) supersedes the functions of the central timer module. There are four different levels of GEM depending on vehicle option content. Two levels of GEM will be available in service. The GEM module controls the following:

  • Rear fog lamp
  • Heated windshield
  • Front wiper - intermittent wipe function
  • Front washer system
  • ” Lights - on" warning
  • Interior light delay
  • Low washer fluid warning indicator
  • Door ajar warning indicator
  • Low fuel warning indicator
  • Locking functions - remote locking, central locking, double locking

Front Wiper/Dwell time Programming

The GEM controls the time between wipes without the need for a seperate switch on the stalk control assembly.

  • The standard default setting is 7.5 seconds.
  • The dwell time may be set to any value between 1 to 25 seconds.
  • If an attempt is made to set the dwell time greater than 25 seconds the GEM will reset to the default dwell time of 7.5 seconds.
  • If the ignition is switched off then the dwell is reset to 7.5 seconds.

The dwell time is set as follows:

  1. Switch the wiper switch to the intermittent position, the wiper will sweep once. Then switch the wiper back into the OFF position.
  1. When the wiper is required to sweep again switch the wiper switch back to the intermittent position. Providing this time interval was not greater than 25 seconds the wiper will wipe the windshield with a delay equal to the gap between steps 1 and 2.
  1. To adjust the time further switch the wiper switch off and back on when required.

Lights - on Warning

This function is only active when the ignition is in the OFF position. The buzzer will start to chime if the park lamps are in the ON position and the driver door is open. If the lights are not turned off or the door is not closed within 10 minutes the buzzer will deactivate.

Interior Lamp Control

Operation of the interior lamp is dependant on the status of the following.

  1. Door ajar switch status.
  1. Ignition switch.
  1. Headlamp switch.

The interior lamp is fitted with a theater dimming feature. When the interior lamp illuminates it will take 0.5 seconds to go from OFF to full brightness. When the interior lamp extinguishes it takes 5 seconds to go from full brightness to completely OFF.

When the interior lamp switch is in the delay position the following functions apply.

  • The interior lamp will illuminate when a door is opened.
  • If the ignition is turned OFF with the side lights switched ON then the interior lamp will illuminate.
  • The interior lamp illuminates when the vehicle is unlocked using either a key or the radio frequency remote control.
  • When the last door is closed the interior lamp will remain illuminated for 20 seconds then extinguish with dimming. This delay feature does not function with the ignition switch in the ON position.
  • The interior lamp will extinguish when the vehicle is locked using either a key or the radio frequency remote control.
  • If a door is left open for longer than 10 minutes then the GEM module will extinguish the front interior lamp.

Radio Frequency Remote Control

NOTE:
NOTE:Due to the use of radio frequency technology, customers must be made aware of the receiving range of locking, double locking, unlocking and liftgate release which could be above 40 meters, so inadvertant actuation is possible. Due to the choosen frequency being permitted for many other applications (medical equipment, wireless headphones and toy remote controls), if the remote control unit is disturbed by radio wave interferances then the vehicle can not be opened. The vehicle must then be locked and unlocked manually by the key to return to normal state.

Double locking and tailgate/decklid release will work with a double click, which must be within three seconds of each other.

Up to four radio frequency keys can be programmed to one vehicle.
REFER to Key Learning in this section.

Service Mode

NOTE:
NOTE:This self - test is only incooperated into a low specification GEM. Higher specification vehicles are tested using FDS 2000.

To enter this service mode the following procedure must be followed:

  • Switch the ignition to the OFF position.
  • While pressing the rear fog lamp switch turn the ignition to the ON position.
  • Then release the rear fog lamp switch.
  • The buzzer will then be heard three times for 500 ms. The service mode is now active.

If an input is activated the buzzer will sound for 500 ms. The inputs are:

  • The opening of the driver door.
  • The opening of the passenger door.
  • The opening of the liftgate.
  • The front washer switch.
  • The rear fog lamp switch.
  • The front fog lamp switch.
  • The interior lamp switch.
  • The park lamp switch (2 positions).

The output tests:

The output test is active when the intermittant wiper function is set to on. After setting the wiper switch to the intermittant mode the module outputs a signal of two 500 ms sounds on the buzzer indicating the test is active. The first test is active as soon as the two sounds are heard. A test is stopped by pressing the rear fog lamp switch which then activates the next test. The tests are shown in the following table.

Service Mode Output Tests

Test Desciption
1 The wiper motor is activated, sounding the buzzer each time the wiper is in the park position.
2 The rear fog lamp is activated.
3 The windshield heater is activated. CAUTION this will drain the battery.
4 The low washer fluid level indicator is activated.
5 The low fuel level indicator is activated.

Switch back to the input test by switching the intermittent wiper function to the OFF position or exit service mode by switching the ignition to the OFF position.

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious sign of mechanical or electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Chart

Electrical
  • Generic electronic module damaged
  • Loose or corroded connector(s)
  • Fuse(s)
  • Relay(s)
  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the concern is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to FDS 2000 to diagnose the GEM.

NOTE: Any High Specification GEMs that have not been fully diagnosed using FDS 2000 will not be accepted into parts warranty.
