Diagnosis and Testing

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

Pinpoint Tests

PINPOINT TEST A : A SINGLE MIRROR IS INOPERATIVE

TEST CONDITIONS DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS
A1: CHECK FOR CONTINUITY BETWEEN THE INOPERATIVE EXTERIOR MIRROR AND THE DOOR MODULE
NOTE:
NOTE:Use a digital multimeter for all electrical measurements.

Disconnect Inoperative Exterior Mirror C5PM26 or C5PM31.

Disconnect Driver Door Module C5PL01-B or Passenger Door Module C6PL01-B.

Measure the resistance between the:

    Driver Exterior Mirror

  • Driver door module C5PL01-B pin 9, circuit CPM03A (BU/WH), harness side and the driver side exterior mirror C5PM26 pin A-2, circuit CPM03A (BU/WH), harness side.

    Passenger Exterior Mirror

  • Passenger door module C6PL01-B pin 9, circuit CPM06A (GN/WH), harness side and the driver side exterior mirror C5PM26 pin A-2, circuit CPM06A (GN/WH), harness side.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
INSTALL a new exterior mirror.
REFER to: Exterior Mirror (501-09 Rear View Mirrors, Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit CPM03A (BU/WH) or circuit CPM06A (GN/WH). TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST B : A SINGLE MIRROR DOES NOT FUNCTION WITH SWITCH LOGIC

Operate the exterior mirror switch.

Does the exterior mirror function with switch logic?
Yes
VERIFY the customer concern.
No
Driver side exterior mirror UP/DOWN inoperative - GO to B2.
Driver side exterior mirror LEFT/RIGHT inoperative - GO to B4.
Passenger side exterior mirror UP/DOWN inoperative - GO to B6.
Passenger side exterior mirror LEFT/RIGHT inoperative - GO to B8.
B2: CHECK THE DRIVER SIDE EXTERIOR MIRROR UP/DOWN CIRCUIT

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Driver Side Exterior Mirror C5PM26-A.

Ignition switch in position II.

Select the driver side exterior mirror. While operating the exterior mirror switch UP and DOWN, measure the voltage between the driver side exterior mirror C5PM26-A pin 2, circuit CPM03A (BU/WH), harness side and the driver side exterior mirror C5PM26-A pin 3, circuit CPM28A (BU/BN), harness side.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts when the exterior mirror switch is moved to the UP position and is the polarity reversed when moved to the DOWN position?
Yes
INSTALL a new driver side exterior mirror.
REFER to: Exterior Mirror (501-09 Rear View Mirrors, Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation.
No
B3: CHECK THE DRIVER SIDE EXTERIOR MIRROR UP/DOWN CIRCUIT FOR CONTINUITY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Driver Door Module C5PL01-B.

Measure the resistance between the driver door module C5PL01-B pin 24, circuit CPM29A (GN), harness side and the driver side exterior mirror C5PM26-A pin 3, circuit CPM28A (BU/BN), harness side.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
VERIFY the customer concern. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit CPM28A (BU/BN). TEST the system for normal operation.
B4: CHECK THE DRIVER SIDE EXTERIOR MIRROR LEFT/RIGHT CIRCUIT

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Driver Side Exterior Mirror C5PM26-A.

Ignition switch in position II.

Select the driver side exterior mirror. While operating the exterior mirror switch LEFT and RIGHT, measure the voltage between the driver side exterior mirror C5PM26-A pin 1, circuit CPM29A (GN), harness side and the driver side exterior mirror C5PM26-A pin 2, circuit CPM29A (GN), harness side.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts when the exterior mirror switch is moved to the LEFT position and is the polarity reversed when moved to the RIGHT position?
Yes
INSTALL a new driver side exterior mirror.
REFER to: Exterior Mirror (501-09 Rear View Mirrors, Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation.
No
B5: CHECK THE DRIVER SIDE EXTERIOR MIRROR LEFT/RIGHT CIRCUIT FOR CONTINUITY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Driver Door Module C5PL01-B.

Measure the resistance between the driver door module C5PL01-B pin 8, circuit CPM29A (GN), harness side and the driver side exterior mirror C5PM26-A pin 1, circuit CPM29A (GN), harness side.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
VERIFY the customer concern. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit CPM29A (GN). TEST the system for normal operation.
B6: CHECK THE PASSENGER SIDE MIRROR UP/DOWN CIRCUIT

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Passenger Side Exterior Mirror C5PM31-A.

Ignition switch in position II.

Select the passenger side exterior mirror. While operating the exterior mirror switch UP and DOWN, measure the voltage between the passenger side exterior mirror C5PM31-A pin 2, circuit CPM06A (GN/WH), harness side and the passenger side exterior mirror C5PM31-A pin 3, circuit CPM33A (VT/BK), harness side.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts when the exterior mirror switch is moved to the UP position and is the polarity reversed when moved to the DOWN position?
Yes
INSTALL a new passenger side exterior mirror.
REFER to: Exterior Mirror (501-09 Rear View Mirrors, Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation.
No
B7: CHECK THE PASSENGER SIDE MIRROR UP/DOWN CIRCUIT FOR CONTINUITY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Passenger Door Module C6PL01-B.

Measure the resistance between the passenger door module C6PL01-B pin 24, circuit CPM33A (VT/BK), harness side and the passenger side exterior mirror C5PM31-A pin 3, circuit CPM33A (VT/BK), harness side.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
VERIFY the customer concern. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit CPM33A (VT/BK). TEST the system for normal operation.
B8: CHECK THE PASSENGER SIDE EXTERIOR MIRROR LEFT/RIGHT CIRCUIT

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Passenger Side Exterior Mirror C5PM31-A.

Ignition switch in position II.

Select the passenger side exterior mirror. While operating the exterior mirror switch LEFT and RIGHT, measure the voltage between the passenger side exterior mirror C5PM31-A pin 1, circuit CPM34A (WH/BN), harness side and the passenger side exterior mirror C5PM31-A pin 2, circuit CPM06A (GN/WH), harness side.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts when the exterior mirror switch is moved to the LEFT position and is the polarity reversed when moved to the RIGHT position.
Yes
INSTALL a new passenger side exterior mirror.
REFER to: Exterior Mirror (501-09 Rear View Mirrors, Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation.
No
B9: CHECK THE PASSENGER SIDE EXTERIOR MIRROR LEFT/RIGHT CIRCUIT FOR CONTINUITY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Passenger Door Module C6PL01-B.

Measure the resistance between the passenger door module C6PL01-B pin 8, circuit CPM34A (WH/BN), harness side and the passenger side exterior mirror C5PM31-A pin 1, circuit CPM34A (WH/BN), harness side.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
VERIFY the customer concern. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit CPM34A (WH/BN). TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST C : THE HEATED EXTERIOR MIRROR IS INOPERATIVE

C1: CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE HEATED REAR WINDOW
NOTE:
NOTE:Use a digital multimeter for all electrical measurements.

Ignition switch in position III.

Ignition switch in position II.

Operate the heated rear window switch.

Does the heated rear window function correctly?
Yes
No
REPAIR the heated rear window.
REFER to: Glass, Frames and Mechanisms (501-11 Glass, Frames and Mechanisms, Diagnosis and Testing).
TEST the system for normal operation.
C2: CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE INOPERATIVE EXTERIOR MIRROR

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Inoperative Exterior Mirror C5PM26-A or C5PM31-A.

Ignition switch in position III.

Ignition switch in position II.

Operate the heated rear window switch.

Measure the voltage between the:
  • Driver side exterior mirror C5PM26-A pin 5, circuit CRD13A (GN/VT), harness side and ground.
  • Passenger side exterior mirror C5PM31-A pin 5, circuit CRD14A (WH/OG), harness side and ground.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit CRD13A (GN/VT) or circuit CRD14A (WH/OG). TEST the system for normal operation.
C3: CHECK THE INOPERATIVE EXTERIOR MIRROR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR CONTINUITY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Inoperative Mirror Door Module C5PL01-B or C6PL01-B.

Measure the resistance between the:
  • Driver side exterior mirror C5PM26-A pin 5, circuit CRD13A (GN/VT), harness side and the driver side door module C5PL01-B pin 10, circuit CRD13A (GN/VT).
  • Passenger side exterior mirror C5PM31-A pin 5, circuit CRD14A (WH/OG), harness side and the passenger side door module C6PL01-B pin 10, circuit CRD14A (WH/OG).

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? operation.
Yes
INSTALL a new heated exterior mirror glass. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit CRD13A (GN/VT) or circuit CRD14A (WH/OG). TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST D : THE AUTO DIMMING MIRROR DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

Measure the resistance between the auto-dimming interior mirror C9PM05 pin 2, circuit GD138AA (BK/WH), harness side and ground.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 91-AD15 (BK/OG). TEST the system for normal operation.
D2: CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE AUTO-DIMMING INTERIOR MIRROR

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between the auto-dimming interior mirror C9PM05 pin 1, circuit B_CBP04A (VT), harness side and ground.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit B_CBP04A (VT). TEST the system for normal operation.
D3: CHECK THE REVERSE CUT-OUT VOLTAGE TO THE AUTO-DIMMING INTERIOR MIRROR

Select N (NEUTRAL).

Measure the voltage between the auto-dimming interior mirror C9PM05 pin 3, circuit RRD12A (BN), harness side and ground.

Is any voltage present?
Yes
No
D4: CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE AUTO-DIMMING INTERIOR MIRROR

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Transmission Switch C1ET47-A-1 or Transmission Switch C1ET47-C-1.

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between the auto-dimming interior mirror C9PM05 pin 3, circuit RRD12A (BN), harness side and ground.

Is any voltage present?
Yes
INSTALL a new transmission switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit RRD12A (BN). TEST the system for normal operation.
D5: CHECK THE REVERSE CUT-OUT VOLTAGE TO THE AUTO-DIMMING INTERIOR MIRROR

Select R (REVERSE).

Measure the voltage between the auto-dimming interior mirror C9PM05 pin 3, circuit RRD12A (BN), harness side and ground.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
INSTALL a new auto-dimming interior mirror.
REFER to: Interior Rear View Mirror - Vehicles With: Rain Sensor/Autolamps (501-09 Rear View Mirrors, Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit RRD12A (BN). TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST E : THE POWER FOLDING MIRRORS DO NOT OPERATE/DO NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

Disconnect Driver Side Exterior Mirror C5PM26-A or Passenger Side Exterior Mirror C5PM31-A.

Measure the resistance between the:
  • Driver door module C5PL01-B pin 17, circuit CPM04A (VT/BN), harness side and the power folding mirror motor C5PM26-A pin 4, circuit CPM04A (VT/BN), harness side.
  • Passenger door module C6PL01-B pin 17, circuit CPM07A (BN), harness side and the power folding mirror motor C5PM31-A pin 4, circuit CPM07A (BN), harness side.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
No
Driver side - REPAIR circuit CPM04A (VT/BN). TEST the system for normal operation.
Passenger side - REPAIR circuit CPM07A (BN). TEST the system for normal operation.
E2: CHECK THE POWER FOLDING MIRRORS UNFOLD CIRCUIT

1
Measure the resistance between the:
  • Driver door module C5PL01-B pin 24, circuit CPM28A (BU/BN), harness side and the power folding mirror motor C5PM26-A pin 3, circuit CPM28A (BU/BN), harness side.
  • Passenger door module C6PL01-B pin 24, circuit CPM33A (VT/BK), harness side and the power folding mirror motor C5PM31-A pin 3, circuit CPM33A (VT/BK), harness side.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
INSTALL a new power folding exterior mirror.
REFER to: Exterior Mirror (501-09 Rear View Mirrors, Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation.
No
Driver side - REPAIR circuit CPM28A (BU/BN). TEST the system for normal operation.
Passenger side - REPAIR circuit CPM33A (VT/BK). TEST the system for normal operation.
