Removal and Installation

Removal

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Stop the piston rod from turning using an Allen key.
    Undo the suspension strut top nut by five turns.

  1. Slacken the wheel nuts.
  1. Raise the vehicle.

  1. Detach the lower suspension arm and the front wheel.

  1. Separate and discard the universal joint gaiter clamping straps.
    • Slide the gaiter back onto the axle driveshaft.

  1. Remove the axle driveshaft from the constant velocity joint.
    • Remove the grease from inside the joint.
    • Prise open the snap ring and hold it open.
    • Carefully push the spindle carrier outwards and pull the front axle driveshaft out of the universal joint.
    • Remove the snap ring from the constant velocity joint.
  1. Pull off the gaiter and tie up the axle driveshaft.

Installation

  1. General note.
    • Renew all snap rings, self-locking nuts, split pins and clamps.

  1. Fabricate a compressor for Special Tool 14-044.
    • Material: aluminium or steel plate.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the snap ring clips firmly in place.
    Fit the axle driveshaft in the constant velocity joint.
    • Fit a new snap ring in the groove of the constant velocity joint.
    • Slide the gaiter with new clamping straps onto the front axle driveshaft.
    • Guide the axle driveshaft into the constant velocity joint until the snap ring clips in place.

  1. Pack the constant velocity joint with new high-durability grease (Ford specification WSD-M1C230-A).
    • Amount: 40 grams on each side.
  1. Position the gaiter and secure it using gaiter clamps.
      NOTE:
      NOTE:Tighten 0,8 mm thick gaiter clamps to 12 Nm and 1,1 mm thick gaiter clamps to 20 Nm.
    • Insert the compressor into the special tool.
    • Position the special tool so that the compressor rests against the clamp head.
    • Tighten the gaiter clamp using the special tool.

  1. Install the lower suspension arm and the front wheel.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Tighten the wheel nuts.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Stop the piston rod from turning using an Allen key.
    Tighten the suspension strut nut.
