Diagnosis and Testing

NOTE:
NOTE:If the generic electronic module (GEM) is changed, the new one must be configured. For this purpose, the vehicle-specific data is read out of the module to be replaced using WDS and is transferred to the new module.
REFER to: Kommunikations-Netzwerk - gebaut ab 02/2005 (418-00, Diagnosis and Testing).
NOTE:
NOTE:Before reading out the vehicle-specific data, remake all the electrical connections to the module to be removed, so that communication between the module and WDS is ensured.
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.

Visual Inspection

Electrical
  • Fuse(s)
  • Lamp(s)
  • Connector(s).
  • Switches
  • Wiring harness
  1. Resolve any obvious causes or concerns found during the visual inspection before carrying out any further tests.
  1. If the concern is not visually evident, refer to the Symptom Chart.

System checks

NOTE:
NOTE:Use a digital multimeter for all electrical measurements.

PINPOINT TEST A : THE REVERSING LAMP IS INOPERATIVE

TEST CONDITIONS DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS
A1: CHECK FUSE F13 (15 A) (CJB).
1
Ignition switch in position 0.
2
Disconnect Fuse F13 (15 A) (CJB).
3
CHECK Fuse F13 (15 A) (CJB).

Is the fuse OK.?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F13 (15 A) and check the operation of the system. If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to ground using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A2: CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO FUSE F13 (15A) (CJB) FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
1
Connect Fuse F13 (15 A) (CJB).
2
Ignition switch in position II.
3
Measure the voltage between fuse F13 (15 A) (CJB) and ground.

Is battery voltage measured?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the voltage supply to fuse F13 (CJB) using the Wiring Diagrams. If necessary RENEW the CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.
A3: CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT THE REVERSING LAMP SWITCH
1
Ignition switch in position 0.
2
Disconnect Reversing lamp switch from connector C72.
3
Ignition switch in position II.

4
Measure the voltage between the reversing lamp switch, connector C72, pin 1, circuit 14-LG28 (VT/WH), wiring harness side and ground.

Is battery voltage measured?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between fuse F13 (CJB) and the reversing lamp switch using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A4: CHECK THE REVERSING LAMP SWITCH
1
Ignition switch in position 0.

2
Connect a fused jumper wire (15 A) at the reversing lamp switch, connector C72, between pin 1, circuit 14-LG28 (VT/WH) and pin 2, circuit 14S-LG39 (VT/OG), wiring harness side.
3
Ignition switch in position II.
4
CHECK the reversing lamp.

Does the reversing lamp illuminate?
Yes
INSTALL A NEW reversing lamp switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
A5: CHECK THE GROUND CONNECTION OF THE REVERSING LAMP FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
1
Ignition switch in position 0.
2
Disconnect Reversing lamp from connector C41a.

3
Measure the resistance between the reversing lamp, connector C41a, circuit 31-LG39 (BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Is less than 2 Ohm measured?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuits 14S-LG39(A) (VT/OG) between the reversing lamp switch and the reversing lamp using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK and RENEW the reversing lamp as required. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the reversing lamp and soldered connection S120 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK and RENEW the reversing lamp as required. CHECK the operation of the system.

PINPOINT TEST B : THE REVERSING LAMP IS PERMANENTLY ON

TEST CONDITIONS DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS
B1: CHECK REVERSING LAMP SWITCH
1
Ignition switch in position 0.
2
Disconnect Reversing lamp switch from connector C72.
3
Ignition switch in position II.
4
CHECK the reversing lamp.

Is the reversing lamp permanently on?
Yes
No
INSTALL A NEW reversing lamp switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
B2: ELIMINATE THE GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM) AS CAUSE FOR THE SHORT TO BATTERY VOLTAGE
1
Ignition switch in position 0.
2
Disconnect Fuse F1 (20 A) (CJB).
3
Disconnect Fuse F2 (10 A) (CJB).
4
Disconnect Fuse F16 (20 A) (CJB).
5
Disconnect Fuse F17 (15 A) (CJB).
6
Disconnect Fuse F23 (20 A) (CJB).
7
Disconnect Fuse F33 (15 A) (CJB).
8
Ignition switch in position II.
9
CHECK the reversing lamp.

Does the reversing lamp illuminate?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to the reversing lamp switch, C72, pin 2 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
INSTALL a new GEM. CHECK the operation of the system.
