Tempo L4-122 2.0L DSL (1984)
Camshaft: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Disconnect breather hose from camshaft cover.
3.
Remove camshaft cover bolts, then the camshaft cover.
4.
Remove flywheel timing mark cover from clutch housing.
5.
Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC.
6.
Remove front and rear timing belt covers.
7.
Loosen front timing belt tensioner, then remove timing belt from camshaft sprocket.
8.
Install an adjustable wrench onto camshaft boss, then loosen front camshaft sprocket bolt.
9.
Hold camshaft with wrench then remove rear camshaft sprocket bolt.
10.
Using tool Nos. T77F-4220B1 and D80L-625-4 or equivalents, remove camshaft sprockets. Retain camshaft sprocket Woodruff keys.
11.
Remove No. 1, 3 and 5 camshaft bearing caps.
12.
Remove No. 2 and 4 camshaft bearing caps as follows:
a. Loosen one of the camshaft bearing nuts two or three turns.
b. Loosen the remaining camshaft bearing nuts one at a time, two or three turns.
c. Repeat steps 12a and 12b, turning each nut two or three turns at a time, until all camshaft bearing cap nuts are loose.
13.
Remove camshaft and discard camshaft seals.
14.
Remove cam followers and note their location for installation in their original positions.
15.
Reverse procedure to install. For installation of camshaft bearings, proceed as follows. Install camshaft bearings with arrows pointing toward
front of engine. No. 2, 3 and 4 camshaft bearing caps have their numbers stamped on the top surface of the bearing cap. No. 1 and 5
bearing caps are not marked. No. 1 bearing cap has a slot to fit over camshaft thrust flange.
a. Install No. 2 and 4 bearing caps, tightening one of the nuts two or three turns.
b. Tighten the remaining nuts one at a time, two or three turns.
c. Repeat steps 15a and 15b, turning each nut two or three turns at a time until No. 2 and 4 bearing caps are seated.
d. Install No. 1, 3 and 5 bearing caps, and torque nuts to 15-19 ft. lbs.
