NOISE - SQUEAK - MANUAL STEERING GEAR SQUEAKING AT TIE ROD INNER BALL JOINT
FORD 1981-84 ESCORT; 1982-84 EXP; 1984 TEMPO

If the subject vehicles exhibit a squeak at the tie rod inner ball joint when traveling over bumps, the white plastic inner tie rod ball seat should be
replaced with a new gray/black seat. The new part number E4FZ- 3F513-A replaces part number E1EC-3E513-AD.
The following service procedure should be used to replace the tie rod ball joint seat. Refer to Section 13-32 of the Shop Manual for details.
1.
Remove steering gear assembly from vehicle.
2.
Disassemble inner tie rod ball joint and discard the white plastic seat.
3.
Thoroughly clean the tie rod ball, ball joint housing, and end of rack.
4.
Lubricate the new gray/black ball joint seat (ball side only) with 0.4cc-1.0cc of C1AZ-19590-B multipurpose long-life lubricant.
5.
Lightly coat the tie rod ball with C1AZ-19590-B lubricant.
6.
Assemble the ball housing. The plastic seat must be seated firmly against the ball.
NOTE:
It is important that the back of the plastic seat and the end of the rack are clean to avoid joint lock.
7.
Reassemble the gear per Service Manual Section 13-32. Install the small outboard bellows clamps on the tie rods but do not clamp the bellows at
this time. If gear did not have small clamps, install new clamps, part number E1FZ-3K663-A. Clamps must be used when re-using bellows, or
lubricant may leak.
8.
Install gear assembly in vehicle.
9.
Reset toe and install small (outboard) bellows clamps.
NOTE:
Small clamps must be off the bellows during toe adjustment to avoid twisting of the bellows.
