The 1983-1/2 TRW power steering gear assembly incorporates a new plastic pinion cap with four notches for removal. The following procedure should
be used to service this cap.
The tool required for removal of the new pinion plug is T83P-3504-AH and was supplied with the 1983-1/2 essential tool package.
The 1983-1/2 essential tool instruction manual includes a description and instructions for the new tool. An excerpt from this instruction manual is
provided below:

Engage the drive tangs of the Pinion Plug Spanner Wrench (T83P-3504-AH) into the notches of the pinion plug and use a ratchet or flex handle to
remove the pinion plug as shown in Figure 9.
NOTE:
Use extreme care to maintain full drive tang engagement.
