Steering Gear Input Shaft Seal - Fluid Leak

ISSUE:

A fluid leak at the steering gear input shaft may be caused by a worn input shaft seal. Corrosion build-up on the input shaft causes the seal to
wear. Two

new Seal Kits are available to service leak concerns.

ACTION:

If service is required, install a new input shaft seal kit with improved dust cover seals to prevent corrosion build-up on the input shaft.
Refer to the following service procedure for installation instructions.

1.

Use the "ON CAR" repair procedure as outlined in TSB 83-12-4.

Remove the input shaft seal and pinion seal. Refer to the instruction sheet packaged in the seal kit and Figure 8. The correct dust cover can be
selected from the seal kits by checking gear model code shown on the identification tag on the steering gear.

3.

If the input shaft seal journal shows signs of corrosion or wear, replace the entire control valve along with the input shaft seal and pinion seal.

4.

Fill the cavity of the seal at the top of the housing with the grease supplied in the kit and install the dust cover on the input shaft at location shown
on the instruction sheet.
