provided on "Attachment I". Owners of involved vehicles will be sent a copy of one of the letters included in this bulletin.

CARES / OASIS

Although this program will not be contained within CARES or OASIS, you should verify through these systems if a vehicle involved in this program has
any outstanding recalls. You should attempt to complete all uncompleted recalls and program service actions during a single visit by the owner.
 
Your service and parts personnel should be provided with this package so they may become familiar with the program and be able to respond to owner
inquiries.
 
Your cooperation in the timely and effective administration of this program is appreciated.

Technical Instructions

1.

Verify that the power steering fluid leak is the result of a steering gear input shaft seal failure. An external leak should be evident on the underside
of the steering gear housing originating near the input shaft.

 
2.

Refer to the appropriate model year Car Shop Manual for power steering gear removal/installation instructions, torque specifications, precautions
and special tool requirements.

 
3.

Retain the outer tie rods from the removed assembly.

 
4.

Install the new steering gear assembly.

 
5.

Reinstall the retained outer tie rod assemblies.

 
6.

Attach power steering lines to steering gear.

 
7.

Fill power steering system with power steering fluid (Ford Engineering Specification ESW-M2C33-F) (Part Numbers CXT-1-LF12 or
CXT-1-DF). Approximately 2 litres required per car.

 
8.

Evacuate air from power steering fluid system.

 
9.

Inspect for fluid leaks and correct as necessary.

 
10.

Check toe-in and adjust as required.

 
11.

Return removed Power Steering Gear Assembly together with the completed Form 1864 to the Warranty Parts Evaluation Centre.
