Removing inner C.V. joint inner race and bearing assembly

INNER JOINT

Roll Crimp Ball Retainer Type, Fig. 27

NOTE:  On late 1983 and 1984---87 models with 5 speed manual transmission, disassembly of inboard constant velocity joint, Fig. 28, is performed
during removal. Assembly of inboard constant velocity joint is performed during installation as previously described.

1.

Remove circlip from end of joint stub shaft, then using suitable cutters, cut and remove ball retainer, Fig. 29. Discard retainer since a new retainer
is not required for assembly.

2.

Gently tap joint on work surface until assembly can be removed by hand, Fig. 30.

3.

Remove bearings from cage by prying with a dulled screwdriver. Use caution not to damage or scratch any components, Fig. 31.

4.

Rotate inner race to align lands with cage windows, then remove race from bearing cage through wider end of cage, Fig. 32.

5.

Reverse procedure to assemble.

Wire Ring Ball Retainer Type

1.

Remove large clamp, then slide boot back and wipe excess grease.

2.

Using a suitable tool, remove wire ring ball retainer from race.

3.

Remove outer race.

4.

Pull inner race and bearing assembly out until race contacts snap ring.

5.

Using suitable pliers, spread then slide snap ring back onto shaft.

6.

Slide inner race and bearing assembly down the shaft to allow access to the snap ring.

7.

Using a suitable screwdriver, remove snap ring.

8.

Remove inner race and bearing assembly.

9.

Reverse procedure to assemble.
