13-006Ball joint separator
Remove

1. Centralise the steering wheel and lock in the straight ahead position.

2. Disconnect the battery.

3. Remove the clamp plate bolt securing the steering column shaft to the flexible coupling.
   Rotate the clamp plate to disengage.
4. Slacken the front wheel nuts and raise the vehicle.
5. remove the front road wheels.

6. Remove the split pins and castellated nuts securing the track rod ends to the stub axles.
   Discard the split pins.

NOTE:

When the track rod end is separated from the stub axle the ball seal should be protected at all times by wrapping in a cloth.

7. Disconnect the track rod end ball joints from the stub axles.

8. Remove the steering gear.
   Mount the steering gear in a soft jawed vice.

NOTE:

Make a note of the number of turns required to remove the ball joint.

9. Remove the track rod ends.
1. Slacken the track rod end locknuts.
2. Remove the track rod end ball joints.

10. Remove the flexible coupling from the pinion shaft.

11. Press out the rubber mounting bushes.
   Use a press and a suitable deep socket.
Install
12. Press in the rubber mounting bushes.
   Lubricate bushes to aid refitting.

NOTE:

Ensure the ball joints are screwed on the same number of turns as was used to remove them.

13. Refit the track rod ends.
1. Refit the track rod end ball joints.
2. Tighten the track rod end locknuts.

14. Refit the flexible coupling to the pinion shaft.
   Ensure that the block splines are correctly located and that the pinch bolt engages in the pinion groove.

15. Refit the steering gear.

CAUTION:

Ensure that the steering is in the straight ahead position.

16. Refit the ball joint studs to the stub axles.
   Secure the castellated nuts with new split pins.

17. Align the flexible coupling clamp plate over the steering column shaft and secure with a new bolt.
   Coat the pinch bolt with Loctite 242 before refitting.
18. Install the wheels, refer to specifications for wheel nut torques.
19. Lower the vehicle.
20. Reconnect the battery earth lead.
21. Check the front wheel alignment as described in Operation Nos. 14 111 0 and 14 111 3.
