Aligner, Gearshift Lever

Transmission jack
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not loosen the ball joint flange bolts.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Shift the transmission into third gear.
    Remove the gearshift lever extension.
    • Pull up the gearshift lever boot.
    • Remove the gearshift lever extension.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
    For additional information, refer to: Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).

  1. Loosen the driveshaft front center bearing retaining bolts.

  1. Disconnect the steering column flexible coupling from the steering gear pinion.
    1. Remove the nut.
    1. Remove the lower pinch bolt.
    • Detach the steering column shaft and position it to one side.
    • Discard the nut.

  1. Detach the power steering lines from the front axle crossmember.

  1. Using a suitable transmission jack, support the front axle crossmember.
    • Support the engine under the oil pan with a wooden block.

  1. Lower the front axle crossmember 20 to 30 mm.
    1. Remove the front axle crossmember rear bolts.
    1. Loosen the front axle crossmember front bolts.

  1. Using a suitable transmission jack, lower the front axle crossmember.
    • Insert 80 mm wooden blocks.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure, that the transmission is shifted into third gear.
    Loosen the gearshift assembly retaining bolts by three turns and install the special tool.

  1. Tighten the gearshift assembly bolts.

  1. Remove the wooden blocks from the front axle crossmember.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Insert the steering gear pinion at the same time.
    Raise the front axle crossmember and tighten the four retaining bolts (left-hand side shown).

  1. Remove the transmission jack from under the front axle crossmember.
    • Remove the wooden block from the oil pan.

  1. Attach the power steering lines to the front axle crossmember.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new steering column flexible coupling nut. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
    Connect the steering column flexible coupling to the steering gear pinion.

  1. Tighten the driveshaft front center bearing retaining bolts.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Remove the special tool.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that both gearshift lever extension clips are locked on the gearshift assembly.
    Install the gearshift lever extension.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that the gearshift lever boot groove is correctly seated on the gearshift lever extension cam.
    Install the gearshift lever boot.
