Removal and Installation

Removal

All Vehicles
  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable vapors are always present and may ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result personal injury.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Diesel fuel injection equipment is manufactured to very precise tolerances and fine clearances. It is therefore essential that absolute cleanliness is observed when working with these components.
    Remove the fuel filter element.
    For additional information, refer to: Fuel Filter Element - Vehicles With: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) (310-01A Fuel Tank and Lines, Removal and Installation).
Vehicles built up to 11/2004

  1. Detach the coolant hose from the fuel filter (Crash shield shown removed for clarity).

  1. Disconnect the water-in-fuel sensor wiring harness electrical connector (if equipped), (Crash shield shown removed for clarity).

  1. Detach the wiring harness from the fuel filter support bracket (if equipped), (Crash shield shown removed for clarity).
Left-hand drive vehicles with 2.0L diesel engine
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The generator must be protected from contamination. Failure to follow this instruction may cause premature failure of the generator.
    Protect the generator with lint-free material to prevent contamination.
Vehicles built up to 11/2004
  1. Remove the fuel filter crash shield (if equipped).

  1. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter.
    For additional information, refer to: Quick Release Coupling (310-00A Fuel System - General Information, General Procedures).

  1. Remove the fuel filter bracket retaining bolts.

  1. Remove the fuel filter.

  1. Remove the fuel filter service indicator.
Vehicles built 11/2004 onwards

  1. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter.
    For additional information, refer to: Quick Release Coupling (310-00A Fuel System - General Information, General Procedures).

  1. Remove the fuel filter.
    • Remove the fuel filter retaining bolts.
    • Remove the fuel filter crash shield.

  1. Remove the fuel filter service indicator.

Installation

All Vehicles
WARNING:

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Vehicles built up to 11/2004

Vehicles built 11/2004 onwards
CAUTION:
CAUTION:Do not over tighten the fuel filter service indicator. The threads of the fuel filter service indicator are designed to jump back to the untorqued position if the fuel filter service indicator is over tightened. Failure to follow this instruction, will result in air ingress into the fuel system.

  1. Install the fuel filter service indicator.
    • Install the fuel filter service indicator finger tight.
    • Rotate the fuel service indicator one quarter turn clockwise.

Vehicles with 2.0 L Diesel Engine
  1. Remove the lint-free material from the generator.
All vehicles
  1. Bleed the fuel system.
