Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.

PINPOINT TEST A : ONE/BOTH REVERSING LAMP(S) IS/ARE INOPERATIVE

A1: DETERMINE THE INOPERATIVE REVERSING LAMP

Ignition switch in position II.

ENGAGE the reverse gear.
3
CHECK the reversing lamps.

Are both reversing lamps inoperative?
Yes
No
- The reversing lamp, left-hand side is inoperative:GO to A6.
- The reversing lamp, right-hand side is inoperative:GO to A8.
A2: CHECK FUSE F1.14 (BJB)

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect fuse F1.14 (15 A) (BJB).
3
CHECK fuse F1.14 (15 A) (BJB).

Is the fuse OK?
Yes
No
Install a new fuse F1.14 (15 A) (BJB) and TEST the system for normal operation. If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and REPAIR the short to ground by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
A3: CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT FUSE F1.14 (BJB)

Connect fuse F1.14 (15 A) (BJB).

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between fuse F1.14 (15 A) (BJB) and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
No
LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit 30-DD8 (RD) between splice S271 and fuse F1.14 (BJB) by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
A4: CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY OF THE REVERSING LAMP SWITCH FOR OPEN

Disconnect reversing lamp switch from C216.

Ignition switch in position II.

Vehicles with petrol engines: Measure the voltage between reversing lamp switch, connector C216, pin 1, circuit 15-LG28 (GN/WH), harness side and ground.

Vehicles with diesel engines: Measure the voltage between reversing lamp switch, connector C216, pin 2, circuit 15-LG28 (GN/WH), harness side and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
No
LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit between fuse F1.14 (BJB) and reversing lamp switch by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
A5: CHECK REVERSING LAMP SWITCH

Ignition switch in position 0.

Vehicles with petrol engines: Connect a fused jumper wire (15 A) at the reversing lamp switch, connector C216, between pin 1, circuit 15-LG28 (GN/WH) and pin 2, circuit 15S-GL28 (GN/WH), harness side.

Vehicles with diesel engines: Connect a fused jumper wire (15 A) at the reversing lamp switch:
  • 2.4L Duratorq-DI/TDDi (Puma) diesel: connector C216, between pin 2, circuit 15-LG28 (GN/WH) and pin 1, circuit 15S-GL28 (GN/RD), harness side.
  • All other diesel engines: connector C216, between pin 2, circuit 15-LG28 (GN/WH) and pin 1, circuit 15S-GL28 (GN/WH), harness side.

Ignition switch in position II.

CHECK the reversing lamp.

Do the reversing lamps illuminate?
Yes
INSTALL a new reversing lamp switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
- Van, bus, combi: LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit between the reversing lamp switch and splice S360 by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
- Chassis cab: LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit between the reversing lamp switch and splice S95 by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
A6: CHECK THE REAR LAMP ASSEMBLY, LEFT-HAND SIDE

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect rear lamp assembly, left-hand side from.
  • Van, bus, combi: connector C121
  • Chassis cab: connector C1079

Ignition switch in position II.

ENGAGE the reverse gear.

Measure the voltage at the rear lamp assembly, left-hand side:
  • Van, bus, combi: connector C121, between pin 1, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK) and pin 5, circuit 31-LF23 (BK), harness side.
  • Chassis cab: connector C1079, between pin 5, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK) and pin 1, circuit 31-LF23 (BK), harness side.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
CHECK the rear lamp assembly. If necessary INSTALL a new one. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
A7: CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT THE REVERSING LAMP, LEFT-HAND SIDE
NOTE:
NOTE:Transmission in reverse

Measure the voltage between rear lamp assembly, left-hand side:
  • Van, bus, combi: connector C121, pin 1, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK), harness side and ground.
  • Chassis cab: connector C1079, pin 5, circuit 15S-LG9 (GN/BK), harness side and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
- Van, bus, combi: LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit 31-LF23 (BK) between the rear lamp assembly and splice S113 by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
- Chassis cab: LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit 31-LF23 (BK) between the rear lamp assembly and splice S93 by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
- Van, bus, combi: LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit between splice S360 and rear lamp assembly by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
- Chassis cab: LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit between splice S95 and rear lamp assembly by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
A8: CHECK THE REAR LAMP ASSEMBLY, RIGHT-HAND SIDE

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect rear lamp assembly, right-hand side from.
  • Van, bus, combi: connector C124
  • Chassis cab: connector C1080

Ignition switch in position II.

ENGAGE the reverse gear.

Measure the voltage at the rear lamp assembly, right-hand side:
  • Van, bus, combi: connector C124, between pin 1, circuit 15S-LG16 (GN/OG) and pin 5, circuit 31-LF24 (BK), harness side.
  • Chassis cab: connector C1080, between pin 5, circuit 15S-LG16 (GN/OG) and pin 1, circuit 31-LF24 (BK), harness side.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
CHECK the rear lamp assembly. If necessary INSTALL a new one. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
A9: CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT THE REVERSING LAMP, RIGHT-HAND SIDE
NOTE:
NOTE:Transmission in reverse

Measure the voltage between rear lamp assembly, right-hand side:
  • Van, bus, combi: connector C124, pin 1, circuit 15S-LG16 (GN/OG), harness side and ground.
  • Chassis cab: connector C1080, pin 5, circuit 15S-LG16 (GN/OG), harness side and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
- Van, bus, combi: LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit 31-LF24 (BK) between rear lamp assembly and splice S22 by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
- Chassis cab: LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit 31-LF24 (BK) between rear lamp assembly and splice S92 by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
- Van, bus, combi: LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit between splice S360 and rear lamp assembly by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
- Chassis cab: LOCATE and REPAIR the open circuit between splice S95 and rear lamp assembly by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST B : THE REVERSING LAMPS ARE ON CONTINUOUSLY

NOTE:
NOTE:Ensure that an existing trailer socket is connected with neither a trailer nor an adapter during this measurement.

Disconnect reversing lamp switch from connector C216.

Ignition switch in position II.

CHECK the reversing lamps.

Are the reversing lamps on continuously?
Yes
No
INSTALL a new reversing lamp switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
B2: DETERMINE THE EQUIPMENT OF THE VEHICLE

Determine the equipment of the vehicle.

Is the vehicle equipped with with parking aid?
Yes
No
B3: RULE OUT PARKING AID MODULE AS POSSIBLE CAUSE FOR A SHORT TO POWER

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect fuse F2.1 (15 A) (CJB).
3
Ignition switch in position II.

CHECK the reversing lamps.

Are the reversing lamps on continuously?
Yes
No
INSTALL a new parking aid module. TEST the system for normal operation.
B4: DETERMINE THE EQUIPMENT OF THE VEHICLE

Ignition switch in position 0.

Connect fuse F2.1 (15 A) (CJB).

Determine the equipment of the vehicle.

Is the vehicle equipped with with 2.0L diesel engines?
Yes
No
LOCATE and REPAIR the short to power in the circuits connected with splice S1058 by using the wiring diagrams. Vehicles with trailer tow: CHECK the trailer socket (pin 8). TEST the system for normal operation.
B5: RULE OUT POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) AS POSSIBLE CAUSE FOR A SHORT TO POWER

Ignition switch in position 0.
2
Disconnect fuse F2.5 (15 A) (CJB) .
3
Disconnect fuse F1.21 (20 A) (BJB) .
4
Ignition switch in position II.

CHECK the reversing lamps.

Are the reversing lamps on continuously?
Yes
LOCATE and REPAIR the short to power in the circuits connected with splice S1058 by using the wiring diagrams. Vehicles with trailer tow: CHECK the trailer socket (pin 8). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
CHECK the PCM. If necessary INSTALL a new one. TEST the system for normal operation.
