WARNING:
WARNING:To avoid accidental deployment, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components. The backup power supply must also be depleted before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side impact sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches. Refer to the workshop manual to determine the location of the front air bag sensors. The side impact sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillar (if equipped). To deplete the the backup power supply, disconnect the battery ground cable(s) and wait at least one minute. Disconnect the auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped). Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Always wear safety glasses when working on an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling an air bag module. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:To minimize the possibility of premature deployment, do not use radio key code savers when working on the supplemental restraint system. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:To minimize the possibility of injury in the event of premature deployment, always carry a live air bag module with the bag and trim cover pointed away from the body. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:To minimize the possibility of premature deployment, live air bag modules must only be placed on work benches which have been ground bonded and with the trim cover facing up. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Never probe the electrical connectors of air bag modules or any other supplemental restraint system component. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Painting air bag module trim covers could lead to deterioration of the trim cover and air bag. Do not for any reason attempt to paint discolored or damaged air bag module trim covers. Install a new component. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  1. CAUTION:
CAUTION:Make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
Disconnect the battery ground cable(s). For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.

  1. Detach the driver air bag module.
    • Remove the screw covers and remove the retaining screws.

  1. Remove the driver air bag module.
    • Disconnect the driver air bag module electrical connector.
    • Disconnect the horn push electrical connectors.
Vehicles with automated gearshift

  1. Disconnect the steering wheel gearshift controls electrical connector.
All vehicles

  1. Remove the steering wheel.

  1. Remove the steering column upper shroud.
    • Using a thin bladed screwdriver, release the two clips.

  1. Remove the steering column lower shroud.

  1. Disconnect the air bag sliding contact electrical connectors.
    • Using a thin bladed screwdriver, release the locking tangs and detach the electrical connectors from the steering column bracket.

  1. Detach the multifunction switches.
    • Depress each locking tang in turn and slide each switch upwards.

  1. Remove the air bag sliding contact.

  1. WARNING:
WARNING:Incorrect centralization may result in premature component failure. If in doubt when centralizing the air bag sliding contact, repeat the centralizing procedure. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    NOTE:
NOTE:New air bag sliding contacts are supplied pre-centralized and sealed with a red sealing key. If a new air bag sliding contact is installed break-off the red sealing key. If an existing air bag sliding contact is being installed, carry out the centralizing procedure following.
Centralize the air bag sliding contact.
    1. Turn the air bag sliding contact rotor in a counterclockwise direction until a resistance is felt (approximately 2.5 turns from the central position).
    1. Turn the air bag sliding contact rotor clockwise until the arrow marked on the center of the sliding contact aligns with the raised ``V" section at the 12 o'clock position on the outer cover of the sliding contact (approximately 2.5 turns). The sliding contact is now centralized.

  1. CAUTION:
CAUTION:If there is any break between centralizing the air bag sliding contact and installing the steering wheel, or the vehicle is left unattended by the technician, the centralizing procedure MUST be repeated.
    Install the steering wheel.
