All-wheel drive unit fluid filter

Item
Description
1
Oil filter
2
Snap ring

The all-wheel drive unit features a fluid filter which is secured in the transmission housing with a circlip.

The fluid filter is not changed regularly. It must only be renewed following repairs to the transmission.

Transporting/towing the vehicle

CAUTION:
CAUTION:When recovering vehicles with all-wheel drive, they must ONLY be transported on a flatbed. Failure to observe this can result in damage to the vehicle and/or personal.

Because of the function of the installed clutch and pump units, a difference in speed between the front and rear wheels must not occur when towing the vehicle as, otherwise, the vehicle switches to all-wheel drive mode.

Push-starting the vehicle

The vehicle may be push-started.

Transmission shift unit/all-wheel drive unit – oil change

Oil drain plug, all-wheel drive unit

The all-wheel drive unit and the switch unit have two separate oil areas and therefore a separate oil circuit each.

The oil drain plugs of the all-wheel drive unit are located in the left and right-hand housing cover of the clutch and pump unit.

In order to completely drain the transmission fluid of the all-wheel drive unit, both oil drain plugs must be unscrewed and removed.

Oil filler plug, all-wheel drive unit

The oil filler plug of the all-wheel drive unit is located between the clutch and pump units on the left-hand side in the direction of travel.

The transmission fluid of the all-wheel drive unit is filled up to the bottom edge of the thread of the oil filler plug.

When changing the fluid, initially fill up with 3.5 L of fluid. Afterwards the clutch and pump units need to be filled before again filling up to the lower edge of the thread of the oil filler plug.
Refer to: Transmission Draining and Filling (308-03D Manual Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: 6-Speed Manual Transmission (MT82 4x4), General Procedures).

Regular fluid changes are not required during the service life of the vehicle.
