Oil Pump: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1.

Remove cam cover, distributor assembly and oil pan.

2.

Remove bolt securing oil pickup tube to engine block and the tube from the oil pump.

3.

Remove oil pump mounting bolts, then the oil pump.

4.

Remove rubber hose and relief valve assembly from the pump.

INSPECTION

1.

Measure clearance between drive rotor and driven rotor with a feeler gauge, Fig. 18. If clearance is greater than .0079 inch, replace oil pump
assembly.

2.

Measure clearance between driven rotor and inner wall of pump body, Fig. 18. If clearance is greater than .0098 inch, replace oil pump assembly.

3.

Measure clearance between drive rotor, driven rotor and oil pump cover with a feeler gauge and a straightedge, Fig. 18. If clearance is greater than
.0079 inch, replace oil pump assembly.

4.

Determine clearance between drive shaft and drive shaft hole in pump cover. Measure the inside diameter of the shaft hole in the cover and the
diameter of the drive shaft. Subtract the drive shaft diameter from the inside diameter of the shaft hole. If the clearance is greater than .0098 inch,
replace oil pump.

5.

Inspect components for wear or damage.
