Accord L4-1751cc 1800 EK1 (1982)
Evaporative Emission Control Canister: Testing and Inspection
For 1981 models, follow steps 1-4.
1. Stop engine and disconnect hose from canister PCV fitting, then connect vacuum pump to canister purge fitting and create vacuum. If vacuum
remains steady, pro ceed to step 3 for 1981 models or step 4 for 1982 models. If vacuum drops, replace canister and recheck.
2. Restart engine and reconnect hose to canister PCV fitting. If purge side vacuum does not drop to zero, replace canister and recheck. If purge side
vacuum drops to zero, disconnect vacuum pump.
3. Connect vacuum pump to canister PCV fitting and create vacuum. If vacuum remains steady, disconnect vacuum pump and check purge
control/unloader solenoid valve operation. If vacuum drops, replace canister and recheck.
4. Connect vacuum pump to "TANK" fitting and attempt to create vacuum. If there is vacuum, replace canister and recheck. If not, reinstall gas cap
and canister.
For 1982 models, follow steps 1-5.
1. Stop engine and disconnect hose from canister PCV fitting. Connect vacuum pump to canister purge fitting and create vacuum. If vacuum drops,
replace canister and recheck.
2. Restart engine and reconnect hose to canister PCV fitting. If purge side vacuum does not drop to zero, replace canister and recheck. If purge side
vacuum drops to zero, connect vacuum pump to canister PCV fitting and create vacuum.
3. On Accord models, if vacuum remains steady, disconnect vacuum pump and check thermovalve "B" operation. If vacuum drops, replace canister
and recheck.
4. On Prelude models, if purge side vacuum does not drop to zero, disconnect hose from PCV fitting and check for vacuum at hose. If there is
vacuum, replace canister and recheck. If not, check thermovalve "B" operation. If purge side vacuum drops to zero, connect vacuum gauge to
purge hose and check vacuum with engine speed at 3500 RPM. If there is vacuum, replace canister and recheck. If not, check vacuum line for
blockage or leaks and carburetor port for blockage. Repair, replace, or clean as necessary and recheck.
5. Connect vacuum pump to "TANK" fitting and attempt to create vacuum. If there is vacuum, replace canister and recheck. If not, reinstall gas cap
and canister.
