Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure
Tools Required: J 41352 Modular Column Holding Fixture
CAUTION: Refer to SIR Handing Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disable the SRS. Refer to Disabling the SRS
2. Remove the steering wheel assembly. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.
3. Remove the tilt lever, if equipped. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement.
4. Remove the upper and lower shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Shroud Replacement.
5. Remove the multi-function lever. Refer to Multifunction T/S-Hazard Switch Replacement.
6. Pop the wire harness assembly (4) out of the wire harness strap(5).
7. Remove the 3 wire harness straps (3) from the wire harness assembly.
8. Remove the wire harness strap (2) from the upper tilt head assembly(1).
9. Remove the coil assembly retaining clip (1).
10. Remove the coil assembly (2).
11. Remove the wave washer (3).
Installation Procedure
NOTES: Ensure that all the fasteners are securely seated before applying the needed torque. Failure to do so may result in component damage or
malfunctioning of the steering column.
1. Install the wave washer.
2. In order to install the SRS coil assembly, align the block tooth on the race and upper shaft assembly to the 12 o'clock position.
Important:
-
Ensure that the coil assembly is centered.

The coil assembly becomes uncentered under the following conditions:
-
The steering column is separated from the steering gear and allowed to rotate.
-
The centering spring is pushed down allowing the hub to rotate while the coil is removed from the steering column.
In the event that this occurs, refer to Inflatable Restraint Coil Centering.
3. Install the pre-centered coil assembly to the steering column.
4. Remove the centering tab and discard.
5. Install the coil assembly (2) using the following components for alignment:

The horn tower (1) on the canceling cam assembly inner Ring

The projections on the outer Ring.
Important: Gently pull on the lower coil assembly wire in order to remove any wire kinks inside of the column assembly. Ensure that there are no
kinks or bends in the SRS coil assembly wire. If a kink or a bend is present, interference may occur with the shaft lock mechanism. Turning the
steering wheel may cut or damage the wire.
6. Install the coil assembly retaining Ring. Ensure that the Ring (1) is firmly seated in the groove on the upper shaft assembly (2).
7. Pop the wire harness assembly (4) into the wire strap (5).
8. Install the wire harness strap (2) into the upper tilt head assembly(1).
9. Install 3 wire harness straps (3) from the wire harness assembly.
10. Install the multifunction switch lever. Refer to Multifunction TIS-Hazard Switch Replacement.
11. Install the upper and the lower shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Shrouds Assemble.
12. Install the tilt lever, if equipped. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement.
13. Install the steering wheel assembly. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.
14. Enable the SRS. Refer to Enabling the SRS.
