Tie Rod: Description and Operation
Tie Rod Description

There are two tie rod assemblies.
Each tie rod assembly consists of the following components:

Sleeve
+
Two clamps
+
Two tie rod ends

The two tie rod ends are threaded into the sleeve and secured with the clamps.

The right and left hand threads are used for the following components:
+
Toe-in adjustments
+
Steering gear centering
-
Before any service is performed, note the following items:
+
Position of the tie rod adjuster tube
+
Direction from which the bolts are installed
+
The tie rod adjuster components may be rusted.

If the torque required to remove the nut from the bolt exceeds 9 N.m (62 lb in), perform the following steps:
+
Replace the nuts.
+
Rotate the clamps until they move freely.

Install all parts, with the correct part number, in the proper position.

All of the procedures for the following items apply to the left and the right sides:

Alignment

Adjustment

Assembly
