Brake Master Cylinder: Testing and Inspection
FINDING MALFUNCTIONS
These tests will not find all master cylinder malfunctions. If the cause is not found with these tests, refer to the brake system diagnostic chart for
additional information.
1. Check for a cracked casting or brake fluid leaks around the master cylinder.

Leaks are indicated only if there is at least a drop of fluid. A demo condition is not abnormal.
2. Check for binding pedal linkage and incorrect pushrod length.

Disassemble the master cylinder if there is no brake pedal binding or improper brake pedal travel. Refer Master Cylinder, Service and
Repair.
3. Check the master cylinder for swollen or elongated primary piston seal(s).

If swollen seals are found, refer following information.
Substandard Or Contaminated Fluid
No special fluids are used in this system. However, care must be taken to use the correct fluids. The master cylinder and brake system operate on
hydraulic brake fluid, while the power steering pump operates on power steering fluid. For diagnosis of the hydraulic booster system. refer to
Hydraulic Brake System, Brake Booster.
NOTE:

Power steering fluid and brake fluid cannot be mixed. If brake seals contact power steering fluid or steering seals contact brake fluid, seal
darnage will result.

Improper fluid, water, or any other contaminants in the fluid may cause the brake fluid to boil or deteriorate rubber components in the
hydraulic system.

Swollen master cylinder piston seals indicate that rubber deterioration has occurred. Rubber deterioration is also indicated by swelling of the
wheel cylinder boots, caliper boots, or the master cylinder reservoir diaphragm. If rubber deterioration is found, replace all rubber parts in the
system, including the hoses. Also check for fluid on the brake linings. If any is found, replace the linings.

If the brake fluid is contaminated and the master cylinder piston seals are satisfactory, check for leaks or excessive heat conditions. If no leaks
or excessive heat conditions are found, flush the system.
