Fuel Injector: Description and Operation

OPERATION
The bottom feed Sequential Fuel Injector (SFI) assembly is a solenoid-operated device which the PCM controls. The assembly meters pressurized
fuel to a single engine cylinder. The PCM energizes the injector solenoid, which opens a ball valve. This allows the fuel to flow past the ball valve
and through a recessed flow director plate.
This plate has machined holes that control the fuel flow. The plate generates a conical spray pattern of finely atomized fuel at the injector tip. The
fuel is directed at the intake valve. The fuel becomes further atomized and vaporized before entering the combustion chamber.
The fuel injectors that remain partly open could cause a loss of pressure after the engine shuts down. This can cause long cranking times. The open
fuel injectors could deliver fuel to the engine after the ignition is turned OFF causing dieseling.
