Differential Axle Housing: Service and Repair

Removal & Installation

1.

Remove axle shafts as previously described.

2.

Remove parking brake cable adjusting nut and rear cable from front cable, then the clip attaching parking brake cable to body.

3.

Remove propeller shaft.

4.

Remove center exhaust pipe.

5.

Remove stabilizer bar to rear axle attaching bolts and the stabilizer shackles, then disconnect rear brake flexible hose.

6.

Remove lower shock absorber mounting bolts.

7.

Remove lateral rod assembly.

8.

Remove insulator and spring assemblies.

9.

Remove rear control arm to axle attaching bolts.

10.

Remove bridge to body attaching bolts.

11.

Remove rear axle assembly from under vehicle.

12.

Remove extension housing to axle case attaching bolts and detach extension housing.

13.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Before connecting extension housing to axle case, ensure that a new washer and bumper rubber have been fitted into hole in splines at carrier

side of housing.

b. Torque extension housing to axle attaching bolts to 19-22 ft. lbs.
c. Torque bridge to body attaching bolts to 19-22 ft. lbs.
d. Torque control arm to axle attaching bolts to 44-50 ft. lbs.
e. Install insulator to spring seat on axle case by aligning projected portion of damper rubber with end of the coil spring.
f.

Torque lateral rod assembly attaching bolts to 43-51 ft. lbs.

g. Torque lower shock absorber mounting bolts to 27-30 ft. lbs.
h. Ensure that coil spring is installed in driveshaft and install attaching bolts from extension shaft side, torquing to 18-22 ft. lbs.

Connect brake flexible hose.
