Vacuum Brake Booster: Service and Repair

Removal

1.

Loosen air duct hose clamp, then pull hose from fitting and position aside.

2.

Loosen vacuum hose clamp, then remove vacuum hose.

3.

Remove brake pipe. During removal of brake pipe, use care to prevent spillage of brake fluid onto painted surfaces.

4.

Remove retaining clip from brake pedal jaw joint pin from upper portion of brake pedal.

5.

Remove Master-Vac to master cylinder attaching bolts, then separate Master-Vac from master cylinder.

6.

Remove master cylinder assembly as previously described, then the Master-Vac assembly from vehicle.

Installation

1.

Install Master-Vac assembly into vehicle, then measure distance from Master-Vac flange fact to pushrod end. Distance should be .709-717 inch.
Adjust to specifications using locknut at end of pushrod and pushrod gauge tool No. J-29759. Torque locknut to 9.4 ft. lbs.

2.

Install master cylinder assembly as previously described.

3.

Assemble Master-Vac to master cylinder assembly, then insert attaching bolts and torque to 9.4 ft. lbs.

4.

Install jaw joint pin, then insert new retaining pin.

5.

Install brake pipe, then torque fitting to 11.6 ft. lbs.

6.

Install vacuum hose, then tighten retaining clamp.

7.

Install air duct hose, then tighten hose clamp.
