1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, then isolate cable end with electrical tape or equivalent.
2.
Rotate crankshaft to TDC No. 1 cylinder compression stroke. Ensure camshaft marks are also aligned with their own timing marks and cylinder is
on the compression stroke.
3.
Remove timing belt, refer to TIMING BELT.
4.
Remove camshaft pulleys, then distributor assembly.
5.
Mark position of camshaft bearing caps for installation, then remove camshaft bearing caps in the sequence shown in Fig. 48.
6.
Remove camshafts, then camshaft oil seals.
7.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install camshaft on cylinder head. Ensure dowel pin located at the end of the shaft is at the 12 o'clock position.
b. Remove any oil from contact surfaces of No. 1 and No. 5 bearing caps and cylinder head, then apply sealant part No. TB-1207B or equivalent
as shown in Fig. 49.
c. Torque bearing caps in sequence shown in Fig. 50 to 89 inch lbs.
d. Using oil seal installer tool No. J-37989 or equivalent, install new camshaft oil seals.
e. Torque camshaft pulleys to 43 ft. lbs.
