Idle Speed/Throttle Actuator - Electronic: Description and Operation

IAC Valve

The Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve is activated by the ECM to control engine idle speed while preventing stalls due to changes in engine load.  The valve
is mounted in the intake manifold to regulate the amount of bypass air around the throttle valve.  The ECM sends voltage pulses to IAC motor windings,
causing IAC valve pintle to move in or out a given distance (a step or count) for each pulse, as needed to obtain the desired idle speed.

During idle, proper IAC valve position is "learned" by the ECM based on battery voltage, coolant temperature and engine rpm.  If the position is
incorrect, the ECM will command a reset which will occur when vehicle speed is about 30 mph.

If rpm drops below a specified value and the throttle is closed, the ECM senses a near stall condition and will calculate a new valve position to prevent
stalling.
