Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair
Steering Knuckle & Hub

Removal

1.

Raise and support front of vehicle.

2.

Remove wheel and tire assembly.

3.

Remove brake hose retaining clip from strut, then disconnect hose from caliper.

4.

Unfasten caliper from steering knuckle and support caliper from coil spring using wire.

5.

Remove rotor, then unstake hub nut and remove.

6.

Disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle using a suitable puller.

7.

Disconnect lower control arm ball joint from steering knuckle.

8.

Remove steering knuckle to strut attaching bolts.

9.

Remove hub and knuckle assembly.

Inspection

1.

Check hub from bearing noises and abnormal rotation.

2.

Check hub axial play using a dial indicator. Axial play should be less than .002 inch.

Disassembly

Do not disassemble hub and knuckle unless necessary.

1.

Using tool Nos. J-34866 and J-2619-01, remover hub from steering knuckle. On Impulse with SOHC engine, the hub is removed with the inner
race. Remove inner race from hub using tool J-35893.

2.

On all models, remove outer and inner grease seals, then remove inner snap ring.

3.

On Impulse models with SOHC engine, reinstall inner race removed from hub to hub bearing in steering knuckle.

4.

On all models, press hub bearing from steering knuckle using tool Nos. J-38284 and J-38286.

Assembly

1.

Install hub bearing assembly using tool J-38284 a suitable press.

2.

Install inner snap ring, then inner and outer seals using tool Nos. J-38285 and J-38287.

3.

Press hub into knuckle and bearing using tool Nos. J-38284 and J-35302.

Installation

1.

Position knuckle and hub assembly to driveshaft and temporarily install hub nut.

2.

Install steering knuckle to strut attaching bolts. Torque bolts to 115 ft. lbs.

3.

Install lower control arm ball joint to steering knuckle. Torque pinch bolt to 48 ft. lbs.

4.

Install tie rod end to steering knuckle. Torque nut to 29 ft. lbs.

5.

Remove hub nut and apply grease to axle shaft threads, then reinstall hub nut and torque to 137 ft. lbs.

6.

Stake hub nut in position.

7.

Install brake caliper to steering knuckle.

8.

Install wheel and tire assembly.
