Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2.
On 4WD models, drain transaxle fluid.
3.
On all models, unstake hub nut. Apply brake, then remove hub nut.
4.
Using tie rod end removal tool No. J-21687-02 or equivalent, remove tie rod end from steering knuckle.
5.
Remove lower ball joint pinch bolt from steering knuckle assembly.
6.
Disconnect lower ball joint from steering knuckle.
7.
Remove the hub and knuckle assembly from the drive axle shaft.
8.
Using a pry bar, pry the inboard joint from the transaxle case. Do not pull on shaft assembly or damage to the joints may result.
9.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque new hub nut to 137 ft. lbs.
b. Torque lower ball joint pinch bolt to 48 ft. lbs.
c. Torque tie rod end to 29 ft. lbs.
d. Torque drain plug to 28 ft. lbs.
