Heater Core: Service and Repair
HEATER UNIT/CORE
Removal Procedure
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, drain cooling system.
2.
On models with A/C, discharge A/C system.
3.
On all models, remove instrument panel assembly as follows:
a. Remove steering wheel, then the steering column covers.
b. Carefully remove side window defroster ducts using a screwdriver, then the instrument panel retaining nuts.
c. Remove instrument cluster hood, then the instrument cluster.
d. Remove engine hood release handle retaining screws.
e. Remove speaker grille retaining screws and clips.
f.
Remove glove compartment retaining pins from inside compartment, then the glove compartment.
g. Remove heater and air conditioning control knobs, then the trim bezel.
h. Disconnect the control cable from heater and blower units, then the control lever assembly retaining screws.
i.
Remove the instrument panel retaining nuts and bolts.
j.
Disconnect the instrument harness at the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
k. Remove the instrument panel from vehicle.
4.
On models with A/C, remove evaporator to compressor and receiver tank flare nuts, then the resistor connectors.
5.
Remove three evaporator retaining nuts, then the evaporator assembly.
6.
On all models, disconnect heater hoses from heater core, then remove side ventilator duct.
7.
Remove four heater unit retaining nuts, then the heater unit assembly.
8.
Remove defroster door rod and lever.
9.
Remove plate and seal, then the heater core.
10.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque evaporator to receiver tank nut to 10-20 ft. lbs.
b. Torque evaporator to compressor nut to 20-22 ft. lbs.
