1998 RODEO (UE) REAR BRAKE SQUEAL:
IMPROVED BRAKE SHOES

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1998 Rodeo (UE) models equipped with rear drum brakes (4 x 2 only).

As of March 1998, there was a design change to the rear brake shoes for the 1998 Rodeo (UE). This new part number (5-87831-723-0) supersedes the
old rear brake shoe design and its part number (5-87831-646-0). The design of the brake shoe was revised with an arc profile to ensure better distribution
of shoe-to-drum contact area.

Condition:
During braking, some vehicles may exhibit excessive noise from the rear brakes.

Cause:
This condition may have been caused by insufficient contact pattern between the rear drum and the brake shoe with the old design.

Correction:
After a thorough inspection of the rear brake system, replace the brake shoes (using P/N 5-87831-723-0) if the brake linings show improper wear
patterns and evidence of hot spots appear on the contact surfaces of the brake drum.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Follow procedures outlined in 1998 Rodeo (UE) Workshop Manual: Section 5C.
