Jeep Cherokee workshop manuals

Jeep Cherokee at a glance: 24 manuals, covering 1982 to 2001 models, with engines from 2.1 to 5.9 litres.

About the Cherokee

The original Cherokee (SJ, 1974–1983) was a full-size SUV based on the Wagoneer. For 1984 AMC replaced it with the compact XJ Cherokee, Jeep's first all-new design since 1963 and the first American off-roader with a unibody. The XJ was sold in the US until 2001, and Automobile magazine's Robert Cumberford called it one of the 20 greatest cars of all time.

What these manuals cover

  • 1982–1983 (SJ): the 5.9-litre V8 and the 4.2-litre straight-six.
  • 1984–1986 (XJ): the 2.5-litre four, the 2.8-litre V6 and the 2.1-litre turbo diesel.
  • 1987–2001: the 4.0-litre straight-six and the 2.5-litre four, with two or four-wheel drive.

Tip: the VIN code in the title is the 8th character of the vehicle's VIN, and the 4.0 six and 2.5 four changed codes several times (VIN M, L and S for the 4.0; H, E and P for the 2.5). The Comanche pickup is built on the XJ.
