AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION NOISE DIAGNOSIS
On some 1984-85 Cherokee/Wagoneer 70 Series models with four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission, the torque converter may cause a
rumbling noise during closed throttle deceleration at speeds above 35 mph (55 km/h).
Service correction is as follows.
DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE
Verify that the noise condition occurs while decelerating the vehicle from 55 to 35 mph (90 to 55 km/h) with the throttle closed.
a.
If a rumbling noise does not occur during deceleration as described, further diagnosis is required.
b.
If a rumbling noise does occur during deceleration as described, proceed to Converter Replacement.
Converter Replacement
Removal
1.
Raise the vehicle.
2.
Mark the rear propeller shaft and yoke for assembly alignment.
3.
Disconnect the rear propeller shaft from the transfer case yoke. Secure the shaft to the frame with wire.
4.
Remove the inspection cover from the converter housing.
5.
Remove the bolts attaching the converter to the drive plate.
6.
Support the transmission - transfer case assembly with a transmission jack. Retain the transmission on the jack with safety chains.
7.
Remove the bolts attaching the rear crossmember to the transmission and side sill.
8.
Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the catalytic converter..
9.
Mark the front propeller shaft for assembly reference.
10.
Disconnect the front propeller shaft at the transfer case and secure the shaft to the frame or body with wire.
11.
Lower the transmission slightly and disconnect the oil cooler lines. Cap the lines at the transmission.
12.
Disconnect the backup light switch wire, speedometer cable, vacuum lines and vent hose.
13.
Disconnect the transfer case and transmission linkage.
14.
Remove the bolts attaching the transmission to the engine.
15.
Move the transmission and converter rearward to clear the crankshaft.
16.
Hold the converter in position and lower the transmission assembly until the converter housing clears the engine.
17.
Remove the converter from the transmission. Do not discard the converter It is a returnable item.
18.
Inspect condition of the front pump seal. Replace the seal if nicked, cut, or worn.
Installation
1.
Install replacement torque converter, P/N 8983 100 040 on the transmission. Rotate the converter until the pump drive slots in the converter hub
are vertical and carefully insert the converter hub into the pump. Be sure the drive lugs of the pump inner rotor are properly engaged.
