b. If steering shaft has the standard thread type, use tool J-23653 or equivalent to compress lock plate and remove snap ring from steering shaft.
c. If steering shaft has metric threads, replace compressor tool standard forcing screw with metric forcing screw J-23653-4 before installing

compressor tool onto steering shaft. The lock plate is under spring tension. Do not attempt to remove steering shaft snap ring without
using the specified compressor tool.

7. Remove lock plate compressor tool and remove steering shaft snap ring.
8. Remove lock plate, canceling cam, upper bearing preload spring and thrust washer.
9. On vehicles without cruise control, remove turn signal lever retaining screws, then the lever.

10. On vehicles with cruise control, disconnect electrical connector from switch terminal.
11. Push inward on hazard warning switch knob and remove knob.
12. Position gearshift lever into Park, then remove lever retaining pin and lever.
13. Disconnect turn signal switch harness electrical connector from steering column.
14. Using a suitable tool, compress lock tab retaining shift quadrant lamp wire in connector block and disconnect wire from block.
15. Remove steering column lower bracket and plastic harness protector.
16. Remove column to instrument panel mounting bracket, if necessary.
17. Remove turn signal switch attaching screws, switch and harness assembly from steering column.
18. On vehicles with cruise control, remove turn signal switch lever attaching screw, lever and switch as an assembly.
19. Remove windshield wiper switch assembly from steering column, if equipped.
20. Place lock cylinder in Lock position. Using a suitable tool, compress lock cylinder retaining tab and remove lock cylinder.
21. Remove ignition switch assembly from lower end of steering column.
22. Remove upper housing attaching screws, then the upper housing. The remote rod and shift quadrant lamp wire, if equipped, will be removed

as an assembly along with the upper housing.

23. Remove thrust cap from upper housing.
24. Remove lock bolt, lock rack and rack preload spring.
25. Using a suitable tool, remove lock sector from sector shaft. Note lock sector position for assembly. Remove sector through lock cylinder

housing bore.

26. Remove shift gate lock from upper housing.
27. Remove shift quadrant and shift quadrant lamp cover from upper housing.
28. Remove shift bowl from column jacket.
29. Remove lower nylon bowl bearing from upper end of steering column.
30. Remove steering column from vehicle. Remove steering shaft from lower end of steering column. Remove lower bearing retainer, washer ring

lower bearing preload spring and washer. Remove shift tube and shift tube bearing.

ASSEMBLY

1. Coat all friction and bearing surfaces with suitable grease.
2. Install shift tube onto steering column.
3. Install washer with washer facing upper end of shift tube onto tube assembly.
4. Install preload spring, lower bearing, bearing retainer and retainer ring. Install lower bearing with metal face toward retainer.
5. Install lower nylon bowl bearing into upper end of column jacket. Install bearing with smaller inside diameter facing lower end of column

jacket.

6. Align shift bowl with shift tube assembly and install bowl.
7. Install rack preload spring into upper housing.
8. Position large end of sector onto sector shaft. Using a suitable tool, press sector onto sector shaft. Ensure sector completely seats against sector

shaft groove.

9. Install shift gate lock. Torque shift gate lock attaching screws to 45 inch lbs.

10. Install shift quadrant lamp and lamp cover.
11. Install shift quadrant indicator.
12. Assemble lock bolt onto lock rack, and install assembly into shift bowl. Block tooth of lock rack must engage block tooth of sector.
13. Install thrust cup into upper housing with flared end of cup facing outward.
14. Rotate shift bowl counterclockwise until bowl contacts internal stop, then install upper housing onto steering column. Torque housing attaching

bolts to 60 inch lbs. The shift bowl must be in Park position and rack pulled downward before installing upper housing.

15. Guide shift quadrant lamp wire and remote lock rod into position between shift bowl and steering column jacket.
16. Install turn signal switch and harness assembly into steering column.
17. Install turn signal switch attaching screws. Ensure switch actuating lever pivot is aligned properly and completely seated in upper housing pivot

boss.

18. Install turn signal switch lever and lever attaching screws. Torque lever attaching screws to 35 inch lbs.
19. Install steering shaft, if removed through lower end of steering column.
20. Install thrust washer, upper bearing preload spring and canceling cam onto upper end of steering column.
21. Align lock plate splines with steering shaft splines, then install lock plates Ensure canceling cam shaft protrudes through opening in lock

plate. Inspect and identify steering shaft nut thread type before installing lock plate compressor tool. If shaft has metric type threads,
ensure to replace the compressor tool standard forcing screw with metric forcing screw J-23653-4 before installing tool onto steering
shaft.

22. Install a new steering shaft snap ring onto lock plate compressor tool J-23653 or equivalent onto steering shaft.
23. Compress lock plate and completely seat snap ring onto steering shaft groove.
24. Remove lock plate compressor tool.
25. Install lock plate cover.
26. Align canceling cam and marks on steering shaft and steering wheel. Install steering wheel. Torque steering wheel retaining nut to 30 ft. lbs.
