The ball and trunnion universal joint, is a combination unit functioning as both a slip yoke and universal joint. It is used on some models on the
transfer case end of the propeller shaft. A flange is used to connect one end while a conventional universal joint is used to connect the other.
DISASSEMBLY
1. Straighten retainer plate lock tabs and remove plate and gasket from trunnion housing.
2. Cut and remove protective boot retaining straps.
3. Push trunnion housing and protective boot rearward to expose ball and trunnion assembly.
4. Remove trunnion cap and cap washer.
5. Remove trunnion ball, trunnion ball needle bearings and trunnion ball washer.
6. Remove trunnion pin from pin bore in shaft using an arbor press and suitable adapter.
7. Remove trunnion housing, protective boot and boot clip from shaft.
8. Clean all parts in solvent and wipe dry.
ASSEMBLY
1. Lubricate shaft trunnion pin bore, trunnion pin, trunnion ball and needle bearings and trunnion cap with chassis grease. Also, liberally apply grease
to interior of trunnion housing.
2. Place boot clip on raised, semi-circular boss on shaft. Use rubber bands or string to retain clip during installation.
3. Install protective boot onto shaft and install one boot retaining strap. Make sure boot is seated on raised shaft boss and boot clip before installing
strap. Also make sure strap is seated in strap groove in boot before tightening.
