1. Raise and support vehicle and remove rear wheels.
2. Remove brake drum.
3. Remove axle retainer nuts using access hole in axle shaft flange.
4. Remove axle shaft from housing using suitable slide hammer. Remove bearing cup from housing.
5. Remove oil seal from housing bore, clean bore and install new seal.
6. To remove bearing, drill 1/4 inch hole in retainer ring. Hole depth should be 3/4 of the ring thickness. Do not allow drill to contact axle shaft.
7. Use a large chisel to deeply nick the retaining ring. This will enlarge the ring, or split it, allowing it to be removed. Be certain not to damage axle
shaft.
8. Cut through outer oil seal using a hacksaw, then remove seal from shaft.
9. Using suitable press, remove bearing from axle shaft. Remove retainer plate.
10. When installing new bearing, pack bearing with wheel bearing grease and install with cup rib ring facing axle flange.
11. Lubricate outer diameter of bearing cup and install axle shaft and bearing assembly into axle housing using care not to damage oil seal.
12. Install axle shaft retainer and backing plate to housing. Torque retainer nuts to 30 ft. lbs.
13. Install cup plug into axle flange hole if required.
14. Install brake drum and wheel. Lower vehicle.

It is not necessary to remove rear wheels to facilitate axle shaft replacement.
1. Remove axle flange nuts, lockwashers, and split washers retaining axle shaft flange.
2. Remove axle shaft from housing.
3. If wheel bearings are to be replaced, proceed as follows:
a. Bend lip of lockwasher and remove locknut and lockwasher.
b. Raise and support vehicle.
c. Remove adjusting nut, outer wheel bearing and pull the wheel straight off the axle.
d. Service wheel bearings as required.
e. Reverse procedure to install, then adjust wheel bearings as described in "Wheel Bearings, Adjust."
4. Install new gasket on hub.
5. Install axle shaft and tighten nuts securely. It may be necessary to rotate wheel hub to align axle shaft splines with differential splines.
