Sedona Airbag Control Unit Logic Change
This bulletin provides information relating to a running change in the Sedona Airbag Control Unit (ACU) logic which is being made available to prior
purchasers as a customer satisfaction issue. This change was made to address an airbag deployment in a 5 mph bumper impact procedure conducted by
the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The IIHS procedure involves an unoccupied vehicle with no test dummies hitting a 320,000 lb. barrier at 5 mph. It is not a safety test. The procedure is
only used to estimate repair costs. During this procedure, the airbags in the Sedona deployed, causing the alleged repair costs for the Sedona to increase.
Kia engineers concluded that the deployment was unique to the IIHS procedure, and does not reflect what happens in real world collisions.
However, to eliminate the possibility that a deployment might occur the next time IIHS conducted it's procedure, and to thus prevent confusion among
our customers regarding the significance of the deployment, Kia initiated a production running change in the ACU logic software from 2/20/02. Sedona
owners have been informed of this change.
For owners of Sedona models produced before the ACU logic change, who now also request that their vehicle's ACU logic be changed, a reprogramming
card has been made available for the Hi-Scan Pro to download the new software into the requesting owner's vehicles. Use the procedure to reprogram the
ACU.
REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
1.
Remove the program card from the upper slot on the Hi-Scan Pro tool and insert the Sedona reprogramming card.
