Audio System - Poor Radio Reception
SOURCE: Kia Technician Times
TITLE: Poor Radio Reception
APPLIES TO: Sportage
SERVICE TIP:
CONDITION
Some Sportage owners have reported poor radio reception. This poor performance is exhibited by static noise, distortion and possible slight
interference from some of the vehicles' electrical systems (i.e. A/C clutch engagement pop noise, blower motor buzz noise, relay clicking noise, etc.).
The AM radio reception is significantly worse than the FM reception with more static and popping noise, particularly when driving under bridges
and/or freeway overpasses.
CAUSE
The radio antenna assembly is not adequately grounded to the vehicles' chassis ground due to corrosion build-up. The ring terminal, attached to the
antenna mounting bracket, loses electrical continuity because of corrosion build-up between the ring terminal and bracket.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. Before replacing the customer's radio for a poor reception complaint, check the antenna feeder cable and antenna assembly for electrical
continuity.
2. Check for continuity between the center contact pin of the feeder cable, at the radio end, to the base of the antenna mast mounted on the fender.
3. Check for continuity between the ground contact pins, at the radio end, to any good vehicle chassis ground.
4. If a high resistance or open circuit condition is found, then visually check the ring terminal on the antenna assembly for corrosion.
5. If corrosion is present on the ring terminal, unscrew it from the bracket, remove the corrosion and thoroughly clean the terminal and bracket
mating surface with contact cleaner.
6. Attach the terminal to the bracket with the screw and encapsulate the terminal and screw head with silicone sealant to prevent reoccurrence of
corrosion.
