Thermostat: Description and Operation
THERMOSTAT
The thermostat regulates the flow of coolant through the radiator. The thermostat for the DOHC engine is at the front of the head, in front of the timing
belt cover. When the engine is cold, the thermostat valve is closed and the coolant flow is restricted to the engine coolant passages and the heater core
so the engine can warm up quickly. As the engine warms up and the coolant temperature increases, the thermostat valve begins to open and route some
of the coolant through the radiator. When the coolant temperature reaches 188°F (87°C), the valve is fully open and nearly all of the coolant is routed
through the radiator for maximum engine cooling.
