Overdrive Planetary Gear Set
The overdrive planetary gear set consists of the O/D sun gear, O/D planetary pinion set and the O/D ring gear.
The O/D input shaft is always driven clockwise by the torque converter turbine, which is attached to the O/D planetary carrier. The sun gear is driven
by the O/D clutch, which is applied in all drive ranges except overdrive.
The driving force of the turbine is transmitted through the O/D input shaft to the pinions, moving them clockwise. The overdrive clutch and forward
clutch are attached to the drive wheels. The overdrive one-way clutch outer race is driven clockwise by the overdrive carrier. The resistance of the
overdrive sun gear and the driving force of the carrier causes the sprags to stand up, connecting the sun gear to the carrier (and input shaft). With the
sun gear rotating with the input shaft, the pinions become locked to the ring gear. This drives the forward clutch input shaft.
When overdrive is required, the overdrive clutch is released and the overdrive brake is applied. The sun gear is now held. The carrier, driven by the
O/D input shaft, rotates around the sun gear. The pinions are forced to walk around the sun gear, forcing the ring gear to rotate faster than the pinions.
This results in an overdrive ratio of 0.730:1.
