Drive Belt: Component Tests and General Diagnostics

Belt Tension Check

1. With engine running, watch drive belt tensioner movement.
2. If tensioner has more than 12 mm of movement (play), replace tensioner.
3. Check tensioner. If tensioner arm and spring case contact each other,replace tensioner.
4. Using a suitable belt tension gauge, check belt tension several times at same point on belt away from tensioner, run engine between checks.
5. On models with A/C, if belt tension is less than 66 psi, replace drive belt.
6. On models less A/C, if belt tension is less than 60 psi, replace drive belt.
