One of the four main Systems that may cause a NO START condition in Discovery models when malfunctioning is the Security to GEMS Interface on
1996 and later vehicles.

Turning the key in the ignition on 1996 and later Discovery models causes the following communications sequence to take place:

Turning the ignition on sends a coded signal from the Theft Alarm Unit to the GEMS Unit.

When the GEMS unit senses the proper code from the Theft Alarm, it turns on the MIL light.

^

When the Theft Alarm Unit senses the MIL light is lit, it initiates engine fuelling and cranking.
